    Broad exposure to entire design process, but at tremendous sacrafice in work/life balance

    ProsGood people to work with and great management under Directors. No shortage of projects to work on and chips to tape-out.

    ConsRidiculous project schedules. Very disorganized at times. Lack of vision from Senior management. Profit sharing takes place at VP level and above, so the people doing the real work get nothing.

    Advice to Senior ManagementPut on your visionary caps and develop projects the customers need down the road instead of responding to upgrade requests that may eventually get cancelled or not generate revenue. Also, stop spending so much money on mask sets.

    SMSC as an employer

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)

    ProsThis fabless semi-conductor design house has many opportunities for engineers to learn the entire design flow and has a lot of very good engineers.

    ConsRecent changes in management combined with economic changes have forced SMSC to take advantage of lower cost geographies. Limited earnings potential.

    Advice to Senior ManagementThe CEO talks about rewarding individuals based on performance but has failed to do so. The HR department needs really improve their practices and empower managers to have better tools to help their people advance their careers. More transparency.
