I have been working at Staples

    Pros

Working at home. Company computer. Very rarely have to go into the office.

    Cons

Having your schedule changed to hours outside of your availability with less than a few hours notice. Mandatory overtime, exceeding 50 hours of work a week, and undesirable hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There has been zero transparency between the different levels of employee in this department and it is slowly destroying it.

I have been working at Staples part-time

    Pros

Very hands on. You get to know regular customers.

    Cons

Disorganized. You get customers at the counter PLUS random online orders from two different ordering systems that do not sync with the in store orders for timing, so you're expected to complete orders on a very inefficient timeline. Also, despite the fact that proofs are given and customers sign documents saying they approve of what you're making, management will blame you if the customer decides they don't want to pay for it for whatever reason. You're expected to reach in-store budget and promotional goals despite also being required to ask customers if they want to order online from the print hub (usually a third or less of the in-store price) and hand out coupons for ordering prints out of store.

I have been working at Staples part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Employees are rewarded for good behavior and good sales driving.

    Cons

Corporate expects a lot out of these stores that are slowly failing due to unpreventable circumstances. Management is utterly berated for bad numbers even when everyone is performing. Staples only has room for growth if you move up and switch into supervising/management positions, otherwise your wage basically stagnates while you are there. There are constant openings because no one wants to stay here longer than they need to, just like every other retail position. In regards to the Copy Center specifically, the training is terrible (you're thrown into a world of unknown).

I have been working at Staples part-time

    Pros

They hire anyone who simply wants a job.

    Cons

They consistently hire unqualified people with little or no experience, who either don't show up for work or call in constantly, then do nothing to reprimand them while constantly nagging at the people who are trying hard to do their own jobs. Their own "managers" seem completely overwhelmed at handling a large store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people with at least some experience, and try to pay attention to their work ethic. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of the people you oversee and manage your assets accordingly. Do not treat your good employees with constant scorn while ignoring the lazy ones.

I have been working at Staples part-time

    Pros

As a merchandiser it is not difficult work

    Cons

The corporate structure of the organization has been spread to vertically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Never hire employees based upon how "infectious" there smile may or not be. Hire upon qualifications and potential.
