    Pros

If you try to go and push beyond the responsibilities of your role as a "SAM" you will be recognized and fostered into their Leadership Track program.

    Cons

You will find yourself with limited opportunity to explore other areas of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer some sales goal flexibility when an associate is impacted by uncontrollable factors, like snowstorms, bereavement and other extenuating circumstances that would impact an associates ability to meet all the various requirements to qualify for commission.

Former Employee - Easy Tech Associate in Portland, OR

I worked at Staples part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

As an Easy Tech I was afforded the ability to excercise personal judgement and problem solving when addressing customer problems with their computers. I also liked that work was done when I went home, which was important to me since I was going to school at the same time.

    Cons

It's a retail job which requires you to be able to effectively manage your time to meet a variety of operational tasks. I had to divide my time between selling products and service plans and addressing computers on our bench.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more time for sales training and educating on customer service. Communicate the reasons behind new initiatives and make corporate decision making less opaque.

I have been working at Staples

    Pros

Flexibility in creating your own schedule. Decent base salary if you are just out of college. In this role you can set your own margins

    Cons

Commission structure is very small. Does not pay on everything they ask you to sell. A bit of burn and churn

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Staples part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working here was great. It was a pretty laid back environment, where our primary focus was customer service. I had worked in every single department, so it is very easy and to your benefit to get cross trained. You can pick up others shifts this way for more hours. "Office Supplies" is the best department to work in. You basically get to keep to your self, and work at your own pace, as long as your list gets done for the shift. You have opportunity to grow, though your schedule has to be wide open in order to move to full time. Also the stores cycle through managers a lot, which bring new ideas in often, however might be hard to adjust to at times.

    Cons

Staples tried to hop on the bandwagon a little too late when they introduced mobile phone sales. This was a bad idea to start, since they are an office supply store, not an electronics store. They put the pressure to sell on the Easy Techs, and would basically be on your back the entire shift. It wasn't store managements fault, more so the upper corporate who were pushing on the managers. Pressure to sell is fine, IF you have the foot traffic to reach out to. The odds that someone walks in to the store to buy a cell phone is slim to none. Face it, who walks in to buy some paper and staples and walks out with a 2 year cell phone contract. Other than this, the store was fun, and if you get a solid base team of employees it starts to feel like family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees! Often times they have great suggestions, because they are the ones on the front lines dealing with the customers. Also, it helps employees stay motivated if you do not ask them to do something, you wouldn't do yourself. In other words, lead by example. This is a lot of young teenagers first job. So when you tell them to sell the pen of the month or to sell the insurance plans, show them through example what to say instead of telling them. Be at the register when someone comes up so they can watch your approach to attachment selling.

I have been working at Staples

    Pros

Decent benefits for managers. Work life balance is poor just like any other retail big box.

    Cons

Company for the past couple of years had been in reinvention phase and had restructured twice so you never know what positions will be eliminated. No job security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We all know of change is part of retailers but decide on a solid plan and stick to it instead of trying new things every year.

    Pros

Solid long term growth. Top tier brass really shaking things up and bringing fresh thinking to the table.

    Cons

The labor force is too lean at times. Need more bodies on the sales floor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
