Good place to start your career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsStarcom's strongest asset is its people. Everyone here is a great worker and willing to help you out and listen.

ConsIf you are not working with the right people, being promoted can be very difficult. Company makes it very difficult to negotiate your salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward individuals more for the hard work they do.

Its all about your account and team - its a mixed bags of nuts

    Strategy Director (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsSome really cool accounts and opportunities to move and grow

ConsIt all comes down to the team you are on and who you are paired with. Some account are horrible and others are cake. Turnover like any agency is high but only on the shitty accounts. A lot of it comes down to the senior management. Great leaders have efficient teams.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees more and brainstorm various ways to empower them.

Good entry level job into the media industry

    Media Associate (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsGreat benefits, 23 paid days off a year, gym located across the street, Special K snacks and Coke products available in kitchen, happy hours with vendors, beer Thursday and Friday = great work culture

ConsSlow growth within company, can work some pretty long hours, management and supervisors play favorites and often choose to be "friends" with their associates- which makes for some sticky situations under pressure and deadlines

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure the supervisors aren't dumping all of the work on their associates. Often times the supervisors leave at 5pm and the associates are left with hours of work that must be completed by the morning

Great training, management needs to improve

    Media Associate (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros- Great training at all levels
    - Great vacation package
    - Great health benefits
    - Free Kelloggs and Coke products
    - Free beer
-Working with really smart people on global clients

Cons- Management can be improved (micromanaging is common)
    - Long work hours
    - Hard to have life/work balance
    - Passive aggressive feedback given

Advice to Senior ManagementThe whole philosophy that you have to "pay your dues" as an entry-level employee by working long hours is hard to accept as an employee. Management should respect the fact that people have lives outside of work and that endorsing life/work balance actually makes employees more effective and productive every day.

    Starcom

    Digital Liaison (Former Employee)
    North Chicago, IL

ProsVery cool company. Free breakfast, beverages, and there's always beer in the refrigerator.

ConsToo much reliance on temps. Temps come in, get little-to-no training, and end up leaving for better opportunities, leaving managers in the lurch.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop hiring based on looks and start looking at resumes

Great opportunities for career advancement if you're will to put in the long hours/work

    Media Planner (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat atmosphere and great people. You can learn a lot about the industry. Training programs and paid time off is above the industry standard.

ConsLow wages, long hours. Often feels as though you aren't working fast enough, and haven't accomplished anything. High stress environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat mid/lower level employees with a bit more respect, and they might stick around.

Great group of talented, smart and fun people

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsSocial culture - you will make great friends working here
Generous time off - more days than you can use!
    Fast paced and challenging work

ConsCan be difficult to obtain work life balance due to nature of agency structure - teams are often very understaffed and people fulfill more than 1 role
Salary is not very competitive as compared to other Chicago agencies

Advice to Senior ManagementCorrect the agency structure model - it may work for hitting margin goals but it contributes to high turnover, burned out employees and poor work life balance

    Cool Culture, Cold Pay

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsCoworkers, free breakfast, perks depending on your team/account

ConsLong work hours, lack of transparency, salary isn't competitive

Advice to Senior ManagementRepresent the experience model in all facets not just on paper.

Your chance to work on the biggest brands in the US and world

    Media Director (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsExperience working on the biggest of the big brands
    Great benefits and vacation time
Relatively little drama for an agency
Job security is better than at other agencies
A great deal of training for new hires (if they ask for it)

    ConsAccountants run the place
It can be a 'sink or swim' environment - depending on your team
Promotions tend to be more political vs your abilities and talent

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall, you do well. I think you should nurture the young talent a bit more. They all seem to leave soon after the 2nd year for better opportunities outside Starcom. It would also be nice to know how the business is doing from a financial perspective. Starcommers never really know until Maurice Levy gives his end of the year wrap-up.

Your experience at SMG depends on which account you are placed

    Media Associate (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsA lot of vacation days/paid time off, fun perks to the job.

ConsYour experience can really depend on which account you are placed on. If you are on a good account you will be able to leave at 5 every day and have a good work/life balance. If you're on a bad account you will be working late nights regularly.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to do a better job of pushing back on clients if the team isn't scoped to do what the client is asking for.
