    Pros

Innovative company, exciting projects to work on, can lead to a fulfilling career if you are someone who knows how to navigate a highly-corporate environment.

Challenges are very typical of a fortune 500 company: lots of politics & red tape to navigate. Can be slow to implement new processes (especially those aimed at driving efficiency/innovation).

    Pros

They are a Union hotel, and you will have both Union Worker's benefits as well as Starwood Hotel brand's benefits.

    Cons

As with most Union properties, the employee mentality and moral may not always make it the happiest of places to work in but most jobs are not 100% perfect so this is not so bad as long as you do your job, you should be fine. The management could use some training in fairness and professionalism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your managers should be retrained and tested for the quality of their professional demeanor regularly because they often are the first people to bring a poor example of customer service to the internal client which are the employees that they manage.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Starwood can offer good travel opportunities and perks both job-related and for personal time. The company has a great community of associates. Duties are dynamic which keeps things interesting. The intricate network of this business model was beneficial to learn.

    Cons

Large corporations can be cumbersome and it can take a while to accomplish something due to the dense line of protocols and chain of command.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your contractors like part of the family.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts

    Pros

I worked for Starwood for 10 years. Started off as a guest service manager and held various roles including Director of Housekeeping, Director of Front Office, Director of Guest Services. Had many opportuinites to advance in my 10 years which is why I stated so long. Learned alot and met alot of people along the way who helped me advance my career.

    Cons

When you get promoted in Starwood, they don't take care of you financially. I have been promoted to positions and at times was paid over $20K less than my predecessor which never made much sense to me. I understand that salary is based on experience but in some cases it was robbery. They always stuck to "we don't give more than a XX% increase". It was just a way to save money. I always took the positions though as I worked hard and moved up quickly, faster than I would If I jumped companies at the time. I ultimately left as I hit a point where I couldn't advance anymore. They always said, "we promote from within" or "preference is always to those who work for the company/brand" but I found that get to the next level (Director of Rooms/Operations), they only wanted people with prior experience despite telling me I was ready (I was considered "high-potential") and ultimately proved that I was better than the ones they gave certain positions to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Starwood has lost A LOT of good people over the past few years, atleast in the NYC market and they should try to find a better way of retaining them. Don't screw those financially that are promoted from within. Don't lose sight of your "high-potential" managers. Have senior level managers spend some time with managers of all levels, not just General Managers. They'll probably be interested in what they would find.

    Pros

Very open, non-pressured corporate culture. Celebrates diversity among it's employees. Well run, with high ethical standards. Motivated, self-propelled workforce. Salaries and overall compensation at or above industry standards.

    Cons

Perhaps a bit top-heavy in the VP/Sr. VP department. But people are promoted on merit and for their smarts and contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire your good contractors! You've got some wonderful people working with you. Take the time to discover their abilities and bring them on board.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts

    Pros

When I worked for Starwood, the economy was good. A lot of people were hired at corporate in a short period of time - it was like a revolving door. Although it was quite unorganized, people had a tendency to roll up their sleeves to get the job done. It was fun when Barry was there. Lot's of great parties - great working atmosphere.

    Cons

From what I hear now from current employees, Starwood just isn't the same. It has taken a beating from the economy and, as a result, morale took a huge hit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't underestimate the power of good perks. Star HOT rates are fabulous, but also keep in mind that the other perks are important too - especially when the economy isn't at it's best.
