I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

As an Intern they wasted no time making me feel valued at the company. I was allowed to sit in on huge conference calls and shadow employees in various fields; sustainability, digital marketing, social media, etc. The highlight was presenting a mock advertisement for the Global Homepage to the board of executives! Overall it was a great learning opportunity.

    Cons

I could have taken on more real-life assignments during the course of the summer. It felt as though they did not fully trust us interns to take on any heavy tasks, even though we were all more than capable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Lots of smart, driven people; great benefits (hotel discounts!); clear company-wide goals from a strong management team

    Cons

Work-life balance can be hard depending on workload (which can vary a lot); stronger individuals tend to carry weaker individuals.

I have been working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Starwood Corporate is a good employer. They demand a lot of their employees and help develop them in their career path. Not only do they train you to do your job, but they help you be the best person you want to be. They have great programs for tuition reimbursement and 401K matching. They offer opportunities for advancement provided you’re willing to work in one of the corporate offices. They offer ‘Summer Hours’ which allows you to work 4 hours on Friday provided you make-up your work during the week (Memorial Day – Labor Day). They are an inclusive employer, they recognized domestic partners and provide benefits.

    Cons

The medical benefits are barely adequate. They help offset the $1500 – 3000 deductible (single/family) by contributing $125 quarterly to your HSA. They don’t embrace telecommuting, they have some double standards to their policy around this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Starwood likes to run as if they’re a ‘startup’ which they are not. They have 150,000+ employees globally. This reactionary culture creates chaos and frequently burns people out or services/products/software are not consistent or reliable. Learn from your mistakes put more processes and procedures in place to become a more MATURE (CMMI) company and avoid the chaos.

    Pros

The company is in the Upper, Up Scale segment. We have fabulous properties around the world to provide solutions for our customers. We are able to provide experiences to our customers like no company in our industry. Great work environment. Colleagues that are engaged and happy to be here.
