Don't get sucked into State Farm by the salary during training.

    Agency Intern (Current Employee)
    Murfreesboro, TN

ProsState Farm is willing to invest in their employees by paying a salary to interns in training to become an agents. This is not common in the the insurance industry. They put you through very good training during that time. As an insurance company it is a very solid, stable and conservative company.

ConsThey treat agency interns brutally. They are very unforgiving of mistakes or failure to meet goals regardless of reasons. For part of your training they'll put you in an agents office who may or may not be concerned with your development. Who may or may not be competent themselves. The "family friendly" facade is just that - a facade. You better hit your goals and you better invest every last dime you have when you get your TICA contract. Even after working laboriously and spending your own money, if you are not hitting goals - regardless of whether your rates are competitive or not - they will send you walking. TICA stands for TEMPORARY Independent Contract Agreement. So after a year, if you aren't doing what they want you to you are out, no questions asked.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe DAFO side of State Farm should look at the content of the character of their interns in addition to results.

Great people, balanced work, solid company!

    Public Affairs Intern (Former Employee)
    Bloomington, IL

ProsGreat people--friendly, down to earth, talented, knowledgeable. As an intern, I had an excellent experience within my department. They take care of their employees and people respect each other. There isn't much office politics that I hear about at other places. Employees seemed to really care about teaching me and trusted me with independent work on big projects. They cover relocation expenses for the summertime. They also have an amazing "State Farm Park" with pool, lazy river, miniature golf, intramural sports leagues--it's a ton of fun after work! (Hours were 8-4:15).

ConsIndoors it's cubicle-world. There's a big cafeteria, but I still felt like I was in high school. There isn't a lot of activity in Bloomington. State Farm Park might be the biggest attraction!

Advice to Senior ManagementI wasn't informed of the full-time positions available after graduation.

    I like it

    Intern (Current Employee)
    Champaign, IL

    ProsGreat opportunity.
Research Leads are helping and care about you and you're project.
    Free coffee and snacks
    Laid back environment

ConsSometimes, you run out of things to do. This is due to the fact that sometimes management overestimates the difficulty/time demand of your project.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave the analysts consult with the interns more. Other than that, I don't really have any advice. Keep doing what you do.

From an intern's viewpoint, State Farm Insurance treated everyone with respect and promoted professional development.

    Intern (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsThey have a very extensive and well-managed internship program for college students with amazing benefits, higher than average pay and a lot of responsibility. Everyone treats you as if you are a part of the company (not a lowly intern), the projects are fulfilling and you get the chance to network with some high-level executives. I would recommend this to everyone! Interview process is long and difficult, but well worth it. This company has great integrity.

ConsEntry-level work is fairly limited to Claim's Representative or Underwriter. They have a policy of starting you of on this side of the company, and then you can switch to Human Resources, PR etc. This is okay, but I would like to go into a different segment. Also, they tell you that you will be required to move around a lot to be promoted within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore entry-level positions.

    Great opportunity

    Actuarial Intern (Former Employee)
    Bloomington, IL

ProsIt was a great atmosphere and provided a chance to learn about the business and industry. They also encouraged a healthy balance between work and personel life.

ConsIf you really want to enjoy life in the big city, Bloomington, IL may not be the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementI felt that the feedback management provided to the interns was valuable and should assist in my future career as an actuary.

    Intern (Current Employee)

ProsVery supportive staffs, if the company has a interest in you, the company will give you the opportunities you need to succeed.

ConsCorporate redtapes and bureaucracy. Hard to feel like you are making a difference sometimes.

State Farm Research Center is a great place to intern.

    Strategic Resources Intern (Current Employee)
    Champaign, IL

ProsGreat team work ability. The management is very helpful. Variety of projects to pick from. Even as an intern, you get great opportunities to learn as much as you can about various insurance products. Definitely a stable company to work for in the insurance industry. The research center always has the companies most cutting edge technology. Every intern just received brand new large computer monitors. There are over three large lcd screens all with video conferencing capabilities allowing interns to network and conference between the research center, headquarters (bloomington, IL), and with field agents if necessary.

ConsInsurance can sometimes be a somewhat drab industry. Not the most exciting.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat job trusting young employees with large amounts of responsibility and providing them with the right support.

State Farm, through an intern's eyes.

    Technical Analyst Intern (Former Employee)
    Bloomington, IL

ProsMy perspective is a little different since I interned with State Farm. I thought the internship was great. I got paid well and the hours were very flexible. There were also many extracurricular activities for employees that I participated in. I was on an Ultimate Frisbee team and I had a paid trip to Six Flags with the rest of the interns. The intern housing was also a good experience.

ConsThe feedback from management was a little questionable. Sometimes it felt like I was unimportant, even though I knew I was. I did get to meet many members of upper management, which was a unique experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure interns are fully involved, not just with work but also with team and mentor meetings.
