  1. From an intern's viewpoint, State Farm Insurance treated everyone with respect and promoted professional development.

    Pros

They have a very extensive and well-managed internship program for college students with amazing benefits, higher than average pay and a lot of responsibility. Everyone treats you as if you are a part of the company (not a lowly intern), the projects are fulfilling and you get the chance to network with some high-level executives. I would recommend this to everyone! Interview process is long and difficult, but well worth it. This company has great integrity.

    Cons

Entry-level work is fairly limited to Claim's Representative or Underwriter. They have a policy of starting you of on this side of the company, and then you can switch to Human Resources, PR etc. This is okay, but I would like to go into a different segment. Also, they tell you that you will be required to move around a lot to be promoted within the company.

    Advice to Management

    More entry-level positions.

    Pros

Great people--friendly, down to earth, talented, knowledgeable. As an intern, I had an excellent experience within my department. They take care of their employees and people respect each other. There isn't much office politics that I hear about at other places. Employees seemed to really care about teaching me and trusted me with independent work on big projects. They cover relocation expenses for the summertime. They also have an amazing "State Farm Park" with pool, lazy river, miniature golf, intramural sports leagues--it's a ton of fun after work! (Hours were 8-4:15). G

    Cons

Indoors it's cubicle-world. There's a big cafeteria, but I still felt like I was in high school. There isn't a lot of activity in Bloomington. State Farm Park might be the biggest attraction!

    Advice to Management

I wasn't informed of the full-time positions available after graduation.

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to grow and advance in the company. They had strong values that were seen throughout the corporate environment.

    Cons

As an intern the even though you have a big hand in delivering sales for the agent and everyone in the office, you don't get bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Not much advice is needed. Everything that I have seen so far makes me a firm believer int he company.

    Pros

Decent pay for the amount of work you have to do. Relatively low stress. Great work/life balance. There is a lot of opportunity to move to any department if you're willing to go through training. State Farm uses consultants that help get a lot of work done.

    Cons

The corporate headquarters is in Bloomington, IL. When making a career path change within the company, the training provided to prepare you for a new job isn't always the best. The systems (computer/technical) department isn't full of the most competent minds. Part of the problem is that State Farm tries to be really accommodating for individuals seeking new career opportunities and it's common for non-technical people to move into technical jobs. Some technical jobs require a formal computer related education. Software development is not that exciting at State Farm, it's rather mundane.

    Advice to Management

Don't purchase software that is meant to aid employees before talking to the employees who will be forced to use it.

    Pros

The internship is a great opportunity to travel (if you're not from Bloomington), meet a TON of other students like you, and really get your foot in the door. Almost everyone knows about State Farm, so adding it to your resume will make you have pride in where you've worked. The internship is great experience in any field, because there are so many departments within the company.

    Cons

You have to be ready for the corporate-culture. The internship always starts off really slow (as does any internship) and then once you get into the swing of things, you will be working a full-time job. Once you have enough work to accomplish, the time will go by very quickly.

The way they treat their employees, the best remarkable experience for their customers, and their balance of treating employees like royalty and making sure that we're are also customer centric.

    Cons

You have to be flexible in location to be able to move up to management positions.

    Pros

Other employees worked with were great and very helpful. Treated like a normal employee. Given very realistic preview of the normal office routine. Great support.

    Cons

Not many. Kind of slow at times but that is to be expected. If your interested in a summer internship program, State Farm is a great place to look.

    Advice to Management

Continue the program to keep younger employees with a lot of talent looking at the company for a career.
