    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

My perspective is a little different since I interned with State Farm. I thought the internship was great. I got paid well and the hours were very flexible. There were also many extracurricular activities for employees that I participated in. I was on an Ultimate Frisbee team and I had a paid trip to Six Flags with the rest of the interns. The intern housing was also a good experience.

    Cons

The feedback from management was a little questionable. Sometimes it felt like I was unimportant, even though I knew I was. I did get to meet many members of upper management, which was a unique experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure interns are fully involved, not just with work but also with team and mentor meetings.

I have been working at State Farm

    Pros

Great team work ability. The management is very helpful. Variety of projects to pick from. Even as an intern, you get great opportunities to learn as much as you can about various insurance products. Definitely a stable company to work for in the insurance industry. The research center always has the companies most cutting edge technology. Every intern just received brand new large computer monitors. There are over three large lcd screens all with video conferencing capabilities allowing interns to network and conference between the research center, headquarters (bloomington, IL), and with field agents if necessary.

    Cons

Insurance can sometimes be a somewhat drab industry. Not the most exciting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job trusting young employees with large amounts of responsibility and providing them with the right support.

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

Great opportunities to display strengths. Real work experience. Flexible hours--you can choose your own hours and even have friday afternoons off to explore the city.

    Cons

Away from city life. A lot of responsibility is given you to. Intern activities are not as flashy as I've seen in other companies.

I have been working at State Farm

    Pros

Very supportive staffs, if the company has a interest in you, the company will give you the opportunities you need to succeed.

    Cons

Corporate redtapes and bureaucracy. Hard to feel like you are making a difference sometimes.

Remove barriers and flatten the organization

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

It was a great atmosphere and provided a chance to learn about the business and industry. They also encouraged a healthy balance between work and personel life.

    Cons

If you really want to enjoy life in the big city, Bloomington, IL may not be the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I felt that the feedback management provided to the interns was valuable and should assist in my future career as an actuary.

From an intern's viewpoint, State Farm Insurance treated everyone with respect and promoted professional development.

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

They have a very extensive and well-managed internship program for college students with amazing benefits, higher than average pay and a lot of responsibility. Everyone treats you as if you are a part of the company (not a lowly intern), the projects are fulfilling and you get the chance to network with some high-level executives. I would recommend this to everyone! Interview process is long and difficult, but well worth it. This company has great integrity.

    Cons

Entry-level work is fairly limited to Claim's Representative or Underwriter. They have a policy of starting you of on this side of the company, and then you can switch to Human Resources, PR etc. This is okay, but I would like to go into a different segment. Also, they tell you that you will be required to move around a lot to be promoted within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More entry-level positions.

I have been working at State Farm

    Pros

    Great opportunity.
Research Leads are helping and care about you and you're project.
    Free coffee and snacks
    Laid back environment

    Cons

Sometimes, you run out of things to do. This is due to the fact that sometimes management overestimates the difficulty/time demand of your project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have the analysts consult with the interns more. Other than that, I don't really have any advice. Keep doing what you do.

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

Internship was a lot of fun and a great introduction to the company.

    Cons

The internship does not correlate to a full-time position with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much focus on rigid hierarchy (should work claims/underwriting to get to agent, should be agent to get to AFO, should be at AFO before working in higher management)

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

Given that you have a good agent to work under the training is valuable. Hours are typical. usually co workers are competent and will help you understand and train, you can be certified to sell P&C and Life health insurance very quickly if you focus and study.

    Cons

At times it can be weird because you are competing with coworkers for customers( pay is usually based on comission)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make more of an effort to diversify your market in different subgroups. Offer more sales training to new interns and employees.

    I worked at State Farm

    Pros

Great people--friendly, down to earth, talented, knowledgeable. As an intern, I had an excellent experience within my department. They take care of their employees and people respect each other. There isn't much office politics that I hear about at other places. Employees seemed to really care about teaching me and trusted me with independent work on big projects. They cover relocation expenses for the summertime. They also have an amazing "State Farm Park" with pool, lazy river, miniature golf, intramural sports leagues--it's a ton of fun after work! (Hours were 8-4:15).

    Cons

Indoors it's cubicle-world. There's a big cafeteria, but I still felt like I was in high school. There isn't a lot of activity in Bloomington. State Farm Park might be the biggest attraction!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wasn't informed of the full-time positions available after graduation.
