I have been working at State of Arizona full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For me, the State has been flexible with my schedule - allowing me to telecommute or adjust for kids acitivies. The best advantage to working at the state is the great benefits (leave, medical, etc.)

    Cons

Technology and many ways of thinking of management are very antiquated. There are no raises - you have to switch positions in order to get any kind of increase. This is a poor managment style as you are not able to keep the knowledgable, qualified people in positions unless that person has no desire to increase their income potential. Management is extremely inconsistent and it is often the case that poor managment and supervisors are promoted without regard for ability to manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay closer attention to ability of management to provide quality management and leadership to their teams. Make sure employees are challenged and inspired. Try to get some energy into these drab/draining environments.

I have been working at State of Arizona full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I very much enjoy my job. The majority of my coworkers are enjoyable. The work is interesting. Advancement is encouraged. Training is available. The pay is competitive in most ways. The benefits are great.

    Cons

There are done people who have had their jobs for a long time and do not perform. It is not often that people who underperform or who are no longer qualified for their work receive any sort of corrective action.

I worked at State of Arizona

    Pros

Benefits are amazing and so are the work schedules. Would still be there if not for the budget crisis. Would go back.

    Cons

Slow moving, as is govt. However, not many cons to speak of...made less money, but other aspects more thanmade up for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

make sure that you only lay people off whenthereis no alternative..people really do love to come to work there.

I have been working at State of Arizona

    Pros

    Benefits
    Lots of time off.
Co-workers are great and lots of support to receive continuing education if desired to promote future opportunities.

    Cons

No upward mobility in current job. Need to be appointed to reach Director status, those that are appointed tend to be very political and not necessarily good managers or experienced in the field.
