Good experience to eventually take elsewhere.

Investigator (Former Employee)

I worked at State of North Carolina full-time

ProsWork from home. Very flexible hours. Reasonable work quotas.

ConsManagement changes things just for the sake of changing then changes them back.
No raises for many of the last 10 years. An extra week of vacation doesn't pay the bills.

Advice to Senior ManagementRaise the quotas, hire fewer investigators and pay 3-4k more.

Bittersweet, love the job but do not forsee pay or management getting any better

Magistrate (Current Employee)

I have been working at State of North Carolina full-time for more than 8 years

ProsYou get to help people, and ensure justice and fairness is observed.

ConsAppointed position, no ability to draw unemployment if not reappointed. Management waits until the last week of the last month of the year to tell you whether you are or are not reappointed, so no opportunity to prepare. You serve at the pleasure of the Chief Superior Court Judge who does not have to give you a reason why you are not being reappointed. Retirement is state employees retirement not judges retirement package, even though we are judges. Pay is lowest in the entire US for Magistrate Judges.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake leadership classes

Job stability but low pay

Magistrate (Current Employee)
Durham, NC

I have been working at State of North Carolina full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe job is relatively stable, benefits are good.

ConsSalaries are dreadfully below private sector, statutory raises have been frozen and will be for the foreseeable future.

Recommended for those needing a flexible part-time schedule, but agency rarely hires FT permanent positions w/ benefits

Public Health Survey Interviewer (Former Employee)
Raleigh, NC

I worked at State of North Carolina part-time for more than 3 years

ProsFlexible schedules with day, evening, and weekend hours available. This job may be ideal for students, retirees, and those who don't need health insurance or other benefits, as agency does not provide any benefits to its temporary employees no matter how many years they work there.

ConsThere is very little opportunity to move into full-time permanent positions with benefits. The pay, while above minimum wage, is quite low. Due to government budget cuts, the agency provides neither raises (annual or otherwise) nor bonuses for its temporary employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpportunities for advancement, annual raises, and bonuses or other incentives (besides flexible work schedules) would allow agency to retain good employees longer.

great group to work with no support from higher ups outside the agency

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Raleigh, NC

I have been working at State of North Carolina

ProsI liked working with the state because of the unique job i was doing. I appreciated the Flexibility when i had Dr.s appointments, I think the vacation time and sick time accrual is decent, affordable parking fees, some training opportunities are available.

ConsI worked with the state for over 10 years and had not received a raise in over 4 years. Insurance premiums went up. Cross training is not readily available

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to managers would be to be more professional. Speak to me in the same way you would want me to speak to you.
