I absolutely loved working with the State of Texas.

I worked at State of Texas as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The environment I worked in was very positive. The people you work with and around make a huge difference, and everyone in my division was easy to work and get along with.

    Cons

The only con I can think of is that it was an internship, so I did not get paid for my hard work; however, upon the completion of my internship, I received a letter of recommendation as well as assistance in finding a job after college.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

If you like to make a difference on the community then working for the State is way to serve. This is a place that does a lot of good for the general public and I am part of it.

    Cons

Compensation is better in the private sector, but in my case is not about money is about a chance to give back for all the great opportunities I have had in this country.

I have been working at State of Texas

    Pros

The best thing about working for the state is that it is a stable, decent paying job. There are no surprises, what you see is what you get, so make sure to ask up front all you want to know.

    Cons

Time off policies could use improvement. There work to life balance is not the best and the job could get very mundane.

I have been working at State of Texas full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities for advancement can be available if the employee is work hard and seeks internal opportunities. Typically, employees have to go to new state agencies in order to advance, rather than advancing in their own agencies.

    Cons

The State of Texas imposes a cap for the Executive Director of every Texas State Agency. This causes salaries for the rest of the management staff to have a cap as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide additional opportunities that come in the form of non-monetary benefits such as: tuition reimbursement, opportunities to travel to conferences, etc.

I have been working at State of Texas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Bonuses given for good work when funds are available in the budget.
Enjoy working with the staff in my local office.

    Cons

The workload is heavy as with most state agencies. Due to heavy workload some new hires leave soon after being hired.
