Former Employee – worked at Steak n Shake part-time for less than a year
Pros – Good money for high school student, got to take home tips every night, easy to bond with coworkers, 40% discount on food
Cons – Management doesn't know how to schedule and you will never work the hours that you are told you will work. Managers are very inconsistent and communication is terrible between the different managers and supervisors. Also you will end up working late into the night if you are in second shift because it is a 24 hour restaurant and sometimes big rushes come in and you will not be allowed to leave. Good luck having a personal life along with work.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire enough people to cover a schedule. There were constantly not enough workers to fill the schedule and people constantly had to stay hours past the time that they were scheduled. Also, when I personally asked not to be scheduled during the week, the only times I ended up being scheduled were during the week. Terrible scheduling.

Former Employee – worked at Steak n Shake part-time for less than a year
Pros – The pros are you take home all your tips every night you work.
Cons – Very very disorganization. I kept coming in to take my test after training which they set up and they kept sending me home. Finally got to work and the entire place is a train wreak. Workers were very nasty. If you don't make at least 5 dollars an hour in tips then you get fired.

Current Employee – been working at Steak n Shake full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Due to the large turnover of management staff the opportunity for advancement can be very fast.
Also there are numerous locations that people can transfer to.
Cons – Due to a shortage in quality management candidates it is impossible to discipline assistant managers. If a general manager delegates job functions to assistant managers, and they do not complete the job, there is really no recourse given to them. The bonus structure is set in a way that over 50% of the stores in the company did not bonus last quarter.
Advice to Senior Management – There is a major disconnect between the hourly and management staffs. If the promotional pathway is not fixed then Steak N Shake will not be able to retain or recruit quality individuals.

Advice to Senior Management – The company claims to be a family restaurant then turns around and is so concerned with drive-thru times that the diners and servers on the floor are often over-looked.
The better you become at the job the more likely you are to be used, especially with hiring new employees. High turnover rate because all the strong servers leave for jobs where they are actually treated like human beings by the management. If the customer complains it's your fault, even if you're right and did nothing wrong. Management constantly giving away free food to try to please the customer, half the complaints we receive are from regular complainers who order food and claim they got the wrong order, service was poor, etc. because they know that the management will give them free food and then you're disciplined.
People constantly complain because corporate is always introducing new products, getting rid of the old, portioning everything smaller, and many more issues with corporate. Corporate also made it so third shift pay only goes from 3:00am-7:00am because the servers make too much money, which is a joke.
With the high turn over rate, the strong servers are expected to baby the new servers with no additional pay, unless you become a service trainer so you get to do so much more work for 0.25 cents more! Sound like a blast?! If the management actually treated their strong servers with dignity then there wouldn't be such a high turn over rate and then the company would be a lot more successful but unfortunately we are viewed as numbers, not people. No incentives to become a better employee, the possibility for pay raises is impossible, only way to increase pay is to take on a new position and more responsibilities for very little extra pay.
Take care of your employees first and then worry about the customers. When the employees are the last person you're concerned about the company is bound to fail and unhappy employees leads to unhappy customers.

Former Employee – worked at Steak n Shake full-time for more than a year
Pros – It builds up your skills like dealing with stress, hard physical work and motivating unmotivated employees
Cons – Lack of concern from senior management for their employees: lack of benefits: medical, vacations, and minimum wage pay. They also treat associates like replaceble parts, there is no company loyalty whatsoever, because the company itself does not cultivate that. They will work you to the limit, if possible

Former Employee – worked at Steak n Shake full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Customers are great. They are mostly frequent visitors that are nuts about the burgers. The team in the restaurant, can easily have a family atmosphere. Food is good when service provided, doesn't ruin it.
Cons – Poor structure for feedback. Not much positive reinforcement for a job well done, Threats are the general method for correcting negative results or poor performance. The company has adopted a rotating menu which confuses both the long time employees, and customers, It is sad, the things they sacrifice, in order to supposedly increase the frequency of customer visits.
Advice to Senior Management – Make those with integrity and devotion to the brand feel appreciated, there are so few left.
