Well, at least it's indoors!

Sharps Service Specialist (Current Employee)

I have been working at Stericycle full-time

ProsDo you enjoy collecting/packaging bio-medical waste, with little supervision, but dozens of people willing to tell you how to do your job? Then, has Stericycle got a job for you! As a Sharps Service Specialist, you can run the risk of acquiring a debilitating, life-altering illness (AIDS, Hepatitis, MRSA, C-Diff, the list goes on & on!) through needle-sticks, touching, or just plain breathing! Sound like the job for you? Don't forget beginning some days at 2 or 3AM, low-pay(considering what your doing), hours of walking, and the possibilty of pushing a 500-lb cart to a dock area!
There is very little oversight, so most on-site employees will abuse this privilege to "stick it to the company". Ways in which this is accomplished? Well, since you are tracked by "Field Force Manager", most will pull up to a job site, and sit for an hour (or 2). While they could be inside, tending to their job, instead, they collect hours of unworked pay. Some just "do a drive-by", and drive by the site, since it will appear they've been at their site on Field Force Manager. Another tactic is to get to the job site at 2 or 3a, then sleep for a couple hours, while on the clock, before actually starting at 4 or 5a. Also, it's common for Sharps Service Professionals to get paid for 8 hours, while only actually working 3 or 4 hours.
Some locations are actually appreciative of the role your providing, by not making them collect/package the bio-medical ("SHARPS") containers.

ConsDuring the interview process, of course, you're told the company hires from within. This isn't the case. They're not actually looking for potential, or perceived competency in a role, but who will be dumb enough to take the offered low pay. The hours of supervisors can range from 3a-8p, receiving calls throughout that time-frame, while also responsible for covering sick/vacationing employees, participating in conference calls, doing payroll, performance reviews, hiring/firing, etc.
The politics involved in receiving a promotion are professionally prohibitive. Generally, managers have their favorites (and their whipping boys). If you happen to be an unfortunate of one of the whipping boys, your chances at advancement are either zero, or none.
They offer great benefits, but only if you're a salaried, professional employee. Hourly employees are unable to save anything, let alone participate in 401k, and other offered investment opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou get what you pay for. You want a competent supervisor/manager? Then hire a person who actually has experience w/payroll, performance reviews, the ability to actually LEAD. If you hire someone without any experience, place them into a supervisory roll ("sink or swim"), 9 times out of 10, that person will sink, ESPECIALLY give little or no training is offered.

The oversight of managers, by upper/senior management is laughable. How about actually holding middle-manager's feet to the fire when metrics/performance goals aren't being met.

Not what it seems

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Stericycle full-time for more than 5 years

ProsExtra hours to pick up (while it lasts )

ConsPoor management. Choose not to address what's right in front if them. Supervisors who pretend to work ... Great at acting busy

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace management & hire those who can actually manage. Stop with favoritism we all see it. Rules don't apply to all Treat employees more than just a number Years of dedication should mean something Many have stop caring & only here for a paycheck

Not worth the headache

Sharps Technician (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at Stericycle full-time for more than a year

ProsSome okay co-workers, somewhat decent pay, hospital connections and waste knowledge/education.

ConsTerrible management, slow reimbursement, no advancement opportunities and HR doesn't want to approve you to go to school.

Seriously, this company will use you for all your worth them chew you up and spit you to the curb. They don't really believe in the one team one goal crap and when they say they do, they're bold face lying. I've had a great and horrible management but in the overall, there are only a few hard-working supervisors out there and most of them are worthless.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you see a great worker, don't let their supervisor throw them under the bus for what their personal short-comings are. Don't just take upper management's word for it, do REAL investigations.

Politics - alive and well!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Northbrook, IL

I worked at Stericycle full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHad a great boss for awhile. I was able to choose and manage my own staff.

ConsPolitics rule - a VP who was disruptive and demeaning was finally demoted only to be restored with the new executive staff! Meanwhile they eliminated those who had come forward as whistle blowers. HR was run by non-HR staff and if you brought up issues, you were sure to be walked out the door shortly. Many managers and line staff were blamed when numbers not met. Then there were the Customer Service Reps who delivered "implied" sales contracts to unsuspecting small customers - I think they were even fined for this deceptive business practice. Totally lacking ethics but they have the market cornered and can do what they want.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe board needs to step in and clean house.

They have quite a bit of work to do

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Stericycle full-time

ProsPay, benefits, co-workers, fairly flexible with schedule

ConsNo true leadership, too many HR and payroll mistakes for a company of this size

Advice to Senior ManagementI worked in the Communication Solutions division and there is no clear direction of who is in charge at this company. Someone swoops in one week to set the rules and then someone else comes in the following week and changes everything.

In addition, the upper management has admitted that they're losing clients like crazy and it's no shock. All I ever heard was how much they care about the client but that never proved to be true.

The fact that Stericycle even entered into the call center industry is a joke in itself. They have no idea what they're doing. Stick to medical waste!

Communication Solutions. Overworked and underpaid for the amount of responsibility that is expected.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Stericycle full-time for more than 5 years

ProsPlenty of work to go around. So much work.

ConsI'm making $10,000 less a year than the industry average for my position with no opportunity in sight for advancement.

Training is abysmal.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to shove culture down everyone's throats. Culture should be fostered organically, not through pointless meetings.

Disgusting, lack of professionalism from management. I would give a zero stars if I could.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Stericycle full-time for less than a year

ProsI really can't think of any. Choice of the company they use for Benefits. However you may need them if you get pricked by a needle. The happiest day of my life was running out the door on my last day.

ConsThey are unethical. I have seen management yell at employees, bully tactic they will call you into the office and beat you down for up to six hours. If they don't like you. You will get the worst truck without heat or air. Nasty no training. Some to the stupidest people I've ever met. They act and talk like hoodlums and brag about their salaries. The smell of the factory is enough to make you sick. They treat the workers uncivilized and degrading. Be careful don't make friends they spy on you. They lead you into talking and conference your manager in without you knowing. (or the idiot thought you didn't know, duhhh) Good luck you will need it! I'm not disgruntled just so grateful to be out of there! I'm making 17 thou more a yr!

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your head out of your lunch plate and start running this company. NY needs a shakeup. Put an undercover employee in and I bet half would be fired. Yes, the last post is correct management either shows up for an hr or not at all on Fridays. Stop giving Esop root cause to management and supervisors disgusting behaviors. They push employees for stock, because they own it at the cost of the employees. HR rep sweeps complaints under the rug! Try an anonymous box. No you already know!

a downhill spiral of cronyism

Human Resources (Former Employee)
Northbrook, IL

I worked at Stericycle full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe health insurance is not bad for the Stericycle business unit but they probably will dump all employees on the Affordable Health Care Act exchanges in the near future.
However, if one works for the Patient Communication business unit (the health insurance offered is awful).

ConsManagement is concerned with cronyism, caring about their own careers, and the bottom line; employees are the very bottom of their list of cares in the world.
Developing employees is a stated priority but with so many things at this organization they do not follow through.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire yourselves. The business model is so great that chimpanzees can run the management of this organization (and do a better job).

Stay Away! Unless you like being treated horribly.......

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I have been working at Stericycle part-time for less than a year

ProsThe only pro I can think of was how easy it was too get hired. I had no interview, not one question, took a short test and that was it. Training was ok the first 2 days, after that you didn't know what you were doing one break to the next.

ConsI took this position as a temp solution. By Friday afternoon I walked out. They were totally disorganized, nobody knew what was going on, denied lunches and breaks, talked to horribly, disrespectful, and I would advise everyone to stay away. As a professional in the customer service industry for 15+ years I am seasoned and good at what I do. I had heard great things about the company and thought this would be a way to get a full time permanent position here. By Friday off the first week, I didn't want it anymore. I was given 8 didn't schedule the first 4 days! We were forced on the phones with no quality training, then penalized for asking questions or taking a few moments to note accounts. Then, I was deemed a lunch altogether and told my training class was my lunch and to get back to work. The last time I checked I did not work in a sweat shop I got an hour lunch. Nope, it's free pizza during training so that is your lunch, at least you get paid for it. ( less than half of what I made at my last job). I do not eat junk food at all......pizza really? I have NEVER in my life walked out of a job until now. We were rounded up, herded like cattle, and tossed on a
phone. Management talks down to you a dumb because they just hired anybody. Disorganized, clueless, disrespectful, distasteful, company I have ever set foot in.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile I understand a high call volume, needing a short average handle time, and need for training to have competent agents, you absolutely can not have team leads that are clueless and blatantly rude to people. You will lose every good agent of the 300 approx you hired and keep those that are only there because they are dependent on a paycheck. We all have bills and responsibilities, good people will not stand for that kind of dehumanizing treatment.
