I worked at Stifel Financial full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good work-life balance, as the place clears out around 4:30 or so. The occasional trip to a baseball game is nice.
Great support for technology. Generally there was no issue with spending some money for solid tools.

    Cons

Absolutely no software development lifecycle. Complicating that are moving targets and incredible scope creep, as well as the occasional rebooted project.

The pay is below standard, and the benefits are pretty chintzy. The total benefit/salary package is well below industry average.

People are promoted within despite not having the right experience to actually lead. Nice, well-meaning people, but not really qualified for actual leadership. A lot of leadership has been there FOREVER, and are deeply entrenched in the old way of doing things. It would be nearly impossible for someone to, say, convert them over to AGILE. Buy-in from department management would be nearly impossible... or if a proper SDLC actually was implemented, it would get stomped all over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your management team to be managers. They are great people that are truly busting their butts to do good things, but are ill-equipped to actually MANAGE.

Implement an industry-standard software development lifecycle. The amount of productivity that would happen if AGILE took over would be incredible. But your upper management would have to be fully invested in the process, or it would be an utter failure.

Bring total compensation at least a little closer to average. Because it's really, really low.

I worked at Stifel Financial full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great starting point to career in research. Well respected brand on Wall Street with a growing recognition. Office environment is extremely friendly.

    Cons

Management has become disconnected from the associates and more involved in growing the company from the outside (acquisitions) as opposed to internal career development for existing associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more of a hands on approach to associate development as well as associate advancement. Associate advancement is tied too much to the success of the analyst and not the associates capabilities.

I worked at Stifel Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some great middle management people. But you must find them. There are also some managers that should not even be in the business and have no place in any kind of management role. And they are allowed to continue problematic managing or absentee managing due to poor oversight by higher ups.

    Cons

Poor compensation. Very poor oversight of mismanaged branches. Employee benefits are not great. Overall not a great experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management must supervise branches better and listen to employees. There are many unhappy people and you are losing great individuals, both sales and support staff, because of mismanagement.

I worked at Stifel Financial full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Almost every Friday you got to wear jeans--if that does it for you
    Free food around the holidays
    Small HQ--you will know everybody

    Cons

No advancement unless you are related to someone--There are so many brother/sister, mother/son, aunt/cousin relationships here it is hard to get on a good career path unless you know someone. The pay is WAY under the industry average. If you are a man, you will get promoted, just flirt your way up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your good people, they are all leaving for more pay and more opportunities. I saw so many great employees leave for better careers because some broker's slacker kid got a $50,000/year job handed to them right out of college, while a great employee with experience and a degree was passed over.
