So Sad That Our World Allows This Company To Do Business

    Family Service Counselor (Current Employee)
    Greensboro, NC

ProsI love being there for the families, a good counselor is the best treatment received by a family. Working with the Funeral Homes, although most talk about the cemetery behind our backs.

ConsAs an employee, it is a disheartening challenge day to day and hour by hour. Over the past 2 years I have seen 32 employees turn over and have had 6 Managers. Only one regional Manager! Thant position never changes? I have never been insulted on a regular basis nor have I worked so hard for NO reward or pay. Seriously harassed, not paid for hours worked and regular threats by the public that are so upset by lies.

Advice to Senior ManagementI pray that the Labor Board rips into this company with the KARMA it deserves. I fear for the staff in our cemetery due to broken promises and not providing what has been paid for. I have been cussed, swung at, threatened, blogged and almost ran over with NO support of Management. It is time for employees to come together and give this company what they have given families for years. A nightmare!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

The company only cares about money, not employees or customers

    Sales Manager (Current Employee)

ProsIt is better than unemployment, JUST BARELY!

ConsThey want you to work like a dog for very little pay or support. customers and staff come in a distant second place to the money. NO support from home office. If you want to advertise you end up paying for it yourself.

Advice to Senior ManagementJoin the 21st century. calling old files (that have been called 50 times before) to try and get sales is sooooo out of date, classless and rude. Very poor pay for NO company support

    Treatment of Employees

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSo far the only pro is that the local people I work for are good, honest people.

ConsI was lied to by management right from the beginning. Corporates only concern is the bottom line dollar amount taken in by cemetery. They treat their employees horribly. Corporate figures employees are a dime a dozen and could care less about them.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe bottom line dollar is NOT the only thing that should be important in a company

    Don't waste your time

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTraveling and meeting a variety of Families. Travel time also gets you out of the office

ConsThey require you to spend time going thru the file room pulling existing client files who haven't had all their pre-arrangements taken care of and have us calling these families trying to get into their homes to finish the upsell and so on.. Not very professional. They also request Family Advisors to "Prospect" on the cemetary property when family and friends are visiting their deceased loved ones to try to "Upsell" them as well. Very distasteful. Random door knocking is required as well.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou really need to use different tactics of trying to "sell" or "upsell" people and families. Your ways are very disrespectful as well as distasteful

    Steer clear empty promises

    Employee (Current Employee)
    South Bend, IN

ProsCan write your own paycheck is you can keep your manager or other sales rep. from stealing your customers from underneath you.
It is true the best sales people do not necessitate being the best managers.

ConsUse of threats as motivation coming from VP down to local level management.
Team work is non-existent. Encourage pushy sales and praying on the grief of the families, use of guilt and shame are common techniques. If you are willing to put aside integrity and ethics it would be a great place to work. New acquisitions only concern, not supporting staffing.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn management techniques. Remember that people have lives away from work, its not about working 7 days a week,
Advise to board of directors: reinvest in what you already have, the administrative staff, grounds staff, grounds maintenance, fairer commissions.

My experience so far at StoneMor has been frustrating, sometimes horrific, and not at all what I thought it would be.

"Family Service Counselor" AKA Sales (Current Employee)

ProsThere is some flexibility to this job, as long as the numbers are met, and at the very least has been interesting on many levels.

ConsThe company is less about the families we are servicing and more about meeting numbers. Issues needing to be resolved are put on the back burner as selling pre-need is "more important" - according to management. There are Counselors who are family oriented and genuinely care about helping those who are grieving to make wise decisions, however most of them quit or are terminated for not being aggressive pre-need sales people. A Family Service Counselor wage is minimum wage OR commission - whichever is higher (and in most cases it's minimum wage).

Advice to Senior ManagementThough I understand StoneMor is a business and money needs to be made, the first priority should always be the families you serve. Numbers are important, but at what sacrifice. I have heard more complaints from families than praise, and you are losing the good counselors...

A company where people are posted in high level jobs for which they donot possess the right background or qualifications

Sales and dipping into trust funds are the only focus

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI enjoy working at the cemetery where I am. I feel it is a really important and meaningful job to take care of families and their loved ones. I just don't respect the corporation that manages it.

Good health insurance for full time employees

ConsThe corporation only cares about their stock holders. No raises for field employees for 2014. Even costs of living raises were not given for 2014 even though the company was profitable in 2013.

Improvement requests for our cemetery are ignored. We have to beg for any major improvements that must be done. Those requests are usually not acknowledged.

Grounds crews are only paid a bit above minimum wage for their caring and hard work.

No sick or bereavement pay for sales reps.

Advice to Senior ManagementRegional Sales Managers need to be more motivational not threatienng.
Corp needs to improve the properties and not just strip them of their assets.
Let Family Service Advisers have Sundays off to spend time with their families.

    Proceed with caution

    Sales Counselor (Current Employee)

ProsFor a person with initiative and a thick skin, its a great place. There is a chance to make money, but not a lot of support to do it.
You are providing a needed service-at a grossly inflated price. If you can live with that, sign on.
Easy to like and work for at a local level, its the upper management that makes you reconsider.

ConsWhere to start? The admin in our office calls this company "Flint-StoneMor" because they are so far behind the times in the way they operate. Imagine all the sales staff in our office sharing one computer, not having individual email addresses ( or any company provided email or websites).
There is only one thing that matters to upper management-numbers. Sell, sell, sell. Put in lots of effort, done everything right but have not made your #? out you go. This organization is first and foremost about profits to shareholders, secondarily paying upper management salaries. Customers? Employees? F them all.
Upper management's idea of encouragement is daily conference calls haranguing location managers to get higher numbers. They expect to get blood out of a stone.
Advertising and marketing is non existent or ineffective. The company mind set is several decades out of whack-the text heavy, no graphics print only marketing they do is off putting and scares away more prospects than it draws.Or worse yet, just get tossed with out being
    seen.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have the cart before the horse, the tail is wagging the dog. It is 2013, join the real world, look around and adopt technology and modern marketing to compete in a fair way. Advertise!
Create an environment where the customer comes first, employees are supported and the shareholders are taken care of last.
