I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It's a paycheck. At least I have a job, while so many people are unemployed.

    Cons

They keep cutting hours. And you never know your schedule until 2 days before your week begins. It makes it impossible to take on a second part time job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase part timers hours and have more coverage.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

paid vacation time, the longer you work there the more vacation time you get. Also get paid time off as well, but you need to use them or lose them.

    Cons

    they cut hours last year
    belonging to a union
the good help gets moved around all the time if you're a full timer

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

give pay raises to the people who earned it, not by the union!!!
allow the workers to opt out of the union

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Flexible work schedules are helpful. Depending on your department, you might be able to take additional unpaid time out of work if you've used up your vacation time. If you prove yourself as an employee, you might be able to move to better departments where you are more free to move around, choose your own break times, use the bathroom, and talk to coworkers.

    Cons

Management thinks they know what they're doing and won't stop micromanaging their employees - who actually do know what they're doing. The company is losing money, so it makes a habit of scheduling people so that they have to do the work of multiple people, and this can lead to high stress and pressure. As a grocery clerk, I was once told that I have to let managers know when I'm using the bathroom.. Just in case they need me to cashier. I was once even asked to split a meager 15 minute break in half just to help up front - before help was even needed. Employees are trained to lie to customers (especially about lowering prices) to keep them coming back, which for me causes some level of guilt. Pay is very low (you start at minimum wage and get 30 cent raises a year IF you're lucky) and there are rarely, if ever, bonuses. You accrue vacation time very slowly, starting with one week per year. It takes three years to get to two weeks. The schedules come out late, so you won't know what you're working until the day before - I once got scheduled for Easter without so much as 24 hours notice!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This job isn't easy and employees should be paid more and treated better. There are few opportunities for advancement, and those who do advance often do because of favoritism, which needs to change. Educate those in different tiers of management so that they have a clue about what's going on. Schedule employees so that every department's work gets done efficiently - enough expecting one employee to do three jobs. No wonder customers ask if we're going broke!

    I worked at Stop & Shop part-time

    Pros

More flexible towards college and high school students
Discounts and paid vacations and that's really about it

    Cons

Dealing with picky and annoying customers
Some employees don't work up to ability
Hard to get promoted to the next level or even to corporate, leaving most employees unhappy
The new yellow and purple uniforms (EWWWW.....)
Those who work hard get more work piled on instead of being appreciated
The union doesn't care...hard to get lazy people fired!
Management treats everyone like dirt (except for those who have special needs)
Do yourselves a favor and don't waste your time filling out the application. Don't make the same mistake that I did....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

As soon as people started earning Sunday overtime pay, they cut their hours so that the upper management team can earn more...CHEAP COMPANY!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Calm down! way too extreme and it's only retail. Treat everyone equally.

I worked at Stop & Shop full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Co-workers and customers are great. Retail environment is good for those that like that.

    Cons

Upper management overthinks a simple concept. Their new "FIX" program is horrible. It gives each department hours on what it thinks the daily tasks are. Some stores have lost up to 400 hours a week vs last years hours and employees are utterly frustrated and unhappy. Of course, what can't/doesn't get done has to be done by management. Each specialist has their new ideas to add almost every month and it just gets worse and worse. This company could be the best. It is a shame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real. You are ruining the company. Clueless to how it really is in the stores.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This company promotes from within. Associates start out as part time employees and are eligible for promotion to full time or management level.

    Cons

This company has slid down hill so fast in the last year that I am surprised upper management doesn't find splinters in their bottoms. They have every department in my store perpetually understaffed and under necessary hours. They continually demand more work out of associates and then proceed to cut the number of hours that each department is allotted per week. None of the members of upper management give any consideration to the concerns of associates, and proceed to reprimand and punish associates who cannot handle the deteriorating condition in the workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to associates. We are the ones who communicate with the customers on a consistent basis, and even the customers are disgusted with the way management treats associates.
