    Pros

There was health insurance coverage for my first 13 years and customers are great!

    Cons

No advancement despite having college degree, great customer service skills and management experience from another employer.

    Advice to Management

Please look at your educated employees for management jobs.

    Pros

Flexible work schedules, 5% discount, and no prior experience needed.

    Cons

Management, and CDH's were inconsistent and not all on the same page. Poor communication and just poor management in general. Made working there unnecessarily stressful and annoying.

    Advice to Management

Hire new management or train your managers and supervisors properly.

    Pros

You will get a weekly paycheck. If you work in the Back (like Grocery, Dairy, or Porter), you will be left alone to do your work and respond as needed.

    Cons

If you work Front End you will constantly be managed. When it comes to scheduling and requesting time off, you have to fend for yourself. The store will always be under-scheduled.

    Advice to Management

I don't know who upper management is. Quincy Headquarters or the Home Office in The Netherlands? You are lucky to see your store manager.

    Pros

I suppose there are worse places to work. Like maybe a fast food restaurant.

    Cons

Poor hours. Poor benefits. Pay was nothing special. The store owner prefers to patch things rather than replace faulty equipment.

    Pros

Pay and benefits, there is really no other pros besides that. Vacation time maybe?

    Cons

They're awful, they don't care about the people. They'll pressure you and walk all over you.

    Advice to Management

Start caring about the people and you can retain some talent

    Pros

The hours are flexible enough and you get paid for major holidays. Work itself is mindless once you learn your position.

    Cons

The union. Unnecessary to take money out of my pay check each week just in case I need someone to defend my job. My actions themselves should defend my job.

Disregard for human life. I understand it is retail, but if driving conditions are not safe for the rest of the state than why should employees put their lives at risk to sell $3 worth of eggs.

Greedy. Corporate has no clue what's going on a retail level and sets unrealistic expectations for store managers to hit.

    Advice to Management

Work on work/life balance. Set realistic goals with each department. Stop cutting hours and expect more work to be done, it is physically impossible and exhausting.

    Pros

One thing that's good about Stop & Shop is the flexibility of the hours. It's retail so you have options in term of when you want to work (I do not know how many hours they give to part timers today. But they were pretty generous with hours with me when I was there). Also a pretty good starter job for a teenager and/or student, no experience necessary. It is an Union job so you have protection but Union fees and the guaranteed 20 cent raise a year is a huge con (and not worth it to me).

    Cons

The biggest con for me was Management.

I understand that Management at Stop & Shop have a tremendous responsibility. But there is no need to micro-manage employees to the letter. I personally witnessed a perishable manager interrupting the bakery clerks over a dozen times in the span of a hour. Checking on a new employee is one thing but most employees are doing their best! Secondly and mostly, I found the Managers were often extremely rude, arrogant and aggressive toward my fellow employees. I was personally cursed off by a manager in the backroom for working too slowly (I had influenza and I admit it is my fault for coming to work and not reporting the incident) but Managers should NOT get away with that kind of behavior. Many employees such as myself left because of such a toxic environment. Don't be surprised if you are talked to like a child by a Stop & Shop manager.

    Advice to Management

Respect goes both ways. You don't have to be their friends but treat them with contempt and you WILL get it right back.
