I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

sometimes you were allowed to have a flexible work schedule but often were unable to.
department supervisors were aware of unpleasant work conditions and did as much as possible to help

    Cons

the pay was very low compared to the work load.
Front end associates often had huge cut in hours overall and had a lot of people with handicaps of some kind

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

quality of lower level employees is key, pay based on value to the company and dont cut hours as significantly

I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

Flexible hours, paid vacations, overtime, able to cross train in multiple departments, great people to work with, never boring

    Cons

Management plays favorites with associates and give them significantly more hours than other qualified associates, especially with overtime

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat your employees well.

    Pros

Paid holidays, paid vacation, sick time, personal days and time and half on sundays/holidays. Good with schedual requirements
    Some employees are nice
    Managers are nice

    Cons

    Boring
Get yelled at all the time ( I mean like 15 times/4hr shift) by customers with no motive
No room for improvement at all
Only a 15 min break 4-7 hour shifts.
    Min 4 hour shift
New people get hired in waves so everyone has to carry their baggage while customers compain about them making mistakes/being slow
    Rarely get appreciated for efforts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your enployees more. And I mean say "thank you" not just food 2/year. and promote from within.

I have been working at Stop & Shop full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits hard work!

    Cons

Managers are clueless! Some employees do very little work. while others are trying to do there own work and make up the lazy employees work! Same people lazy every day! Managers don't care! They need to be trained how to run the stores! They just don't care!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't over work the same people everyday! It makes them to give up when you ask too much out of them everyday! Learn how to get all shifts to work as a team! And be aware how long it takes to do certain jobs! Do not let employees be lazy!!! Get a clue!!!!

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The best reason to work here is that it is a union job; which provides some job security. Also, if you work here long enough you develop close friendships with your co-workers. Somewhat flexible in terms of scheduling.

    Cons

Very little, if any chance of promotion or career growth. Untrained management and very poor communication with corporate and management. You are a number here. Very little chance of having your voice or ideas heard; and even less chance of anybody having the authority to approve change. Management is terrified of corporate and will not even remotely consider taking any action to improve workplace. Corporate makes rules that negatively affect cashier and front-end, without much thought to the practical application of the policy. Hours for part-timers are always being cut, which results in shifts where you are very short-staffed and forced to work harder than necessary. Promotions in front-end especially aren't always based on skill or hard work and often are based on social relationships or personality; which can result in people having roles they are not equipped for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to learn how to communicate with their employees. New procedures are never clearly defined or enforced and this creates a confusing environment where front end staff has no idea what is expected of them. Nobody is given proper training and managers often resort to passive aggressive remarks out of frustration. Consider a more formal employee review procedure where employees are able to voice their concerns and are given a chance to improve with specific requirements.

I worked at Stop & Shop full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Reliable paycheck, possibility to move up for reliable workers.

    Cons

Not paid near enough for what you'll have to put up with. Very little respect from managers. Little tolerance for disabled baggers from a couple managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Without your employees (all depts) you wouldn't have a business. Show some respect and understanding. Be more flexible to accommodate their needs and show some respect to all employees.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

People I worked with were great. worked with school schedule. taught you how to deal with customers and problem solve.

    Cons

management sucked. always transferring people. not enough help. always had to work weekends and most holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat your employees better! Better pay!!! If you think your store is running well because of management you are wrong. It is the hard work of the part timers covering peoples hours and doing what management should be that makes the stores run.

    Pros

The time and a half on Sundays and holidays is good. Coworkers are usually nice and friendly...there's always something to do.

    Cons

As a part time worker the hours aren't good. The amount we earn compared to other companies around NY. As a person who lives in NY, you live check to check with the money earned. Management treats workers horrible and most customers take advantage that we have to put them first.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the coworkers are nice and enjoyable to interact with, due to our proximity to the suburbs lots of attractive women enter the store (LOL hey it's something), store is generally on the laid back side, relatively easy to get time off

    Cons

Most of the time the upper management can't get their heads out of their butts, constant politics and ridiculous issues that shouldn't be happening, very often the front end is lacking in key supplies such as plastic or paper bags, not enough hours going around, lately being a unionized company is equally as bad as it is good, no health insurance anymore, overall a dismal atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your crap together. I can't believe this store is even in business still.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Was close to home. Time and a half on sundays (walmart does the same thing without the union dues). Actually, my boyfriend works at walmart and there is not one benefit i had over him.

    Cons

Entire families work here and play favorites. I was one of the few that wasn't related to anyone when i got hired. Management allows favorites to fool around while one person cashiers and bags alone with a long line of customers waiting. Stupid rules like not being able to drink a water bottle even though the registers suck up all the moister from the air in the front end. Boring job. 1 hour working here is the equivalent of 5 hrs working elsewhere. Must be part of union to work here and the union takes $10 per week out of your check...they did that to me for 4 years and i never used the union for anything, ever. Don't work here. My boyfriend makes more at walmart By working there 2 years than i did working 4 years at stop and shop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play favorites so everyone actually works and not just 2/15 people on shift. Oh and learn how to actually manage people
