I worked at Stop & Shop

    Pros

Quarterly raises, associates you work with are pleasant and down to earth.

    Cons

Training is skimmed over, and is usually where a lot of problems stem from. Employees being improperly trained on how to perform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to train each and every individual. Incompetence usually starts at the top of this company and trickles down to mid level management and so on to associates.

I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

The hours are long and repetitive the union blows but for a part time gig its not bad

    Cons

The union protect the slugs who don't do anything as a part timer you are expected to do your work plus the work of the full timers cause they don't do anything but complain about how the part timers suck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the union and hire more help to give better customer service that you currently are giving to the consumer

I have been working at Stop & Shop full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you accept that "if you take the kings shilling, you do the kings bidding" and work hard for the results that they state are needed at that time, you can go from p/t to f/t to salary position. There is a career ladder. It requires that you be a good hard worker who is honest and patient and willing to have an open mind to what you do and where you do it.
support for part time work while enrolled in college or p/t work between semesters. There is a fast track if you are deemed to be worth investing the training in for them. In last six years have seen several young people be promoted from clerk to dept head, dept heads to assistant store managers and further to store managers. It happens but you have got to earn it. Great pay once you are salaried f/t . No end of opportunity to advance, just keep an open mind on what and where you do it. very strong diversity policy. No one will harass you, those in protected status groups can be assured they can advance along with anyone else, no bar to advancement if you are really good at what you do for them. tuition reimbursement, vacation generous after 5 years, health plan, 401k with match, sick leave, training..
The reviews in glassdoor are almost all lower level dept and store folks, there is a lot of chaff and not much wheat written in the reviews. Have extensive experience in the food industry and no retail supermarket company emphasizes Food Safety like Stop and Shop. They have the cleanest stores and the coldest foods. like the ol' blue eyes sang: "if you can make there you can make it anywhere". If you are smart, trainable, have good people skills, can take initiative, have the patience of a Saint, take satisfaction from doing a great job with minimal /no guidance and have minimal or no college this company can advance your career in 5-10 years from p/t to salaried making over 45K/year.
      Have recommended employment to friends.

    Cons

hourly unions have a lot of dead wood, especially in long island ny.
major decisions are made by faceless folks in Carlisle PA offices or Holland. Yes the dutch equity holding company ahold owns them and yes have to make wall st happy with fiscal picture, but where don't you have that now a days.
If you want a steady non challenging 9-5 monday to friday do as little as possible to get by, this company is not for you. Work one day a weekend and get a day/usually wed off. Have to work some part of many holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the dead wood from hourly ranks and cut the brain dead slackers in assistant manager slots. There is a notable number of assistant store managers who seem to be minimally gifted with intelligence, grace ,initiative, humility and honesty but there are so many more that are great to work with. Find a way to get the corporate and store management out into the depts everyday so they see the actual conditions in the perishable depts and make corrections asap.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For the most part, not that bad. Hours go up and down in volume depending how many hours the department gets. Once you hand in availability, they follow it. So it's good for someone who has other responsibilities. They won't kill you for calling out. It's union, Paid holidays, and time and a half after a year I think (this could of changed due to new union contracts).

    Cons

It will never be good enough for Cooperate. They have insane rules like no water on the sales floor, and how they expect us to bag eight items per bag. They expect that one person can do the job of three. Especially at night, you will be understaffed and it's frustrating Management expects every thing to get done. ( they want 2 cashiers from 8-12 to block, do returns and clean while taking customers, rarely ever gets all done).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop nitpicking. Let people do their jobs peacefully, and they will for the most part go to bat for you. Insane rules just slow us down.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Positive work environment. For the most part co-workers are motivated and seem like they want to work with you. The marketing in the store is always positive and spreads a nice message. It keeps customers happy which in tern, keeps us as employees happy too.

    Cons

It's a union gig. It's also a retail position and you work just about most major holidays. There are some employees that are protected by the union that don't really do their job which makes everyone else have to pick up the slack.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to get to know each employee. Try and hire people who want to be there, there are too many disgruntled people on the floor. Get rid of the union and pay the employees a little more on your own.

I worked at Stop & Shop

    Pros

Managers are kind, there are no problems if you do your job. When people slack off is when they have a problem. I did my job and never had any issues whatsoever

    Cons

I would say that there is very little room for upward mobility, but that comes with the territory I suppose. Managers are fine, receptive to any personal issue/need you may have, so long as you approach it professionally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. When you treat employees with respect, they'll work hard.
