Managed Poorly

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Akron, OH

I have been working at Summa Health System part-time for more than a year

ProsThe people I worked with were great for the most part. I miss the patients and I give props to all the ICU nurses.

ConsYour voice as an employee is not heard by management, at least from my experience.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Used to feel like family but layoffs really did their damage

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Akron, OH

I worked at Summa Health System full-time for more than 5 years

ProsReasonable pay, good benefits, felt like a safe environment, patients communicated that they felt they were getting good medical care. Shuttle between hospitals for employees was helpful. Free parking a plus.

ConsNo raises for over three years; lots of layoffs of absolutely wonderful, hard working employees while those that didn't want to pull their weight kept their jobs. Truly felt as though the rich got richer at Summa.

Advice to Senior ManagementSumma used to be very "patient first" but now appears "management first." Patient complaints have really increased since all of the first-line employee layoffs. I left the company because I was afraid I'd be next. In addition, the High/Medium/Low review was difficult to swallow. Some departments were allowed to grant "high" while others were not. It was extremely unfair and unbalanced.

Pretty decent employer and could be a nice place to work

PATIENT ACCESS Representative (Current Employee)
Akron, OH

I have been working at Summa Health System full-time for more than 10 years

Prosmake pretty good pay and hours.

ConsToo strict. Managers don't mind mandating you in a hearbeat and I don't like to accomodate people for vacations at all. Very strict.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to keep employee's, stop being so strict on everything. We are human and not robots.

ProsThe learning experiences are numerous throughout many different areas.

ConsThe office management is not on site at my current employer and it is not easy to reach management regarding a situation that needs to be handled immediately.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep management staff on site for at least four of the five workdays.

Family environment, balanced work/life

IT Engineer (Former Employee)
Akron, OH

I worked at Summa Health System full-time for more than a year

ProsBalanced work/life schedule. Fostered healthy work environment with fellow coworkers.

ConsBenefits need to be more challenging for a hospital. Raises are handed out inconsistently. An example is regional hospitals receive raise but not entire organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more consistent. Handing out raises to certain employees but not all is not fair.

Life at Summa

Staff Nurse (Current Employee)
Akron, OH

I have been working at Summa Health System

ProsEasily accessible from most locations.

ConsSalary and staffing could be better. Parking is inadequate, but they are working on it.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees. When there is an issue regarding employee retention, and possible plans of action are recommended, why not at least give it a trial? The same problems have been going on for at least 20 years and are not being addressed adequately. You are constantly losing valuable experienced emplyees due to lack of satsfaction.
