Insider's view of a sinking ship -- this thing has been adrift for years, and it finally hit the rocks.

Systems Software Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

ProsEngineer-centric environment. Work from home flexibility is probably unparalleled for a company of this size. Access (in theory) to lots of hardware and software resources.

ConsEngineer-centric environment (inmates running the asylum). Consensus required from far too many different groups with opposing priorities in order to get anything done. Layers and layers of lawyers playing corporate CYA. Senior management impotent and enfeebled. No clear company-wide vision has led to infighting and subterfuge between various groups.

Advice to Senior ManagementWell, what can really be said at this point? Enjoy your golden parachutes and Mai-Tais on Barbados. Hopefully you'll get enough from the sale to keep you out of the business world for the rest of your lives.

Favoritism, politics ...NO ethics and Morals

Systems Engineer (Former Employee)
Menlo Park, CA

I worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsGreat Benefits for the Employees, decent compensation , good working environment (offices).

ConsPolitics , politics ,
Kiss the bosses rear end and you would be safe.
Too much "brown Nosing" and absolutely NO morals and ethics on part of upper management.

No responsibility and accountability.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease do not promote Engineers who are NOT qualified to be Managers.
Also Please recognize the hard working people.

It was good while it lasted

Systems Support Engineer (Former Employee)
Southfield, MI

I worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsYou have the opportunity to work with some really good people.

ConsContinued uncertainty and poor top managment.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a plan and stick with it. Even a bad plan that is followed is better than the plan of the week that no one believes in or expects to last.

Not like the old days

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsAccess to technology is open. Access to employees with critical information is wide open as well. Things move quickly and changes of direction (reaction) are common. Key technologies contributed by Sun are numerous.

ConsEngineering focus rather than a sales/marketing focus means we've often pursued technologies for "coolness" sake that went nowhere. Poor leadership and management make working for Sun a hit or miss (depending on your division) and frustrating from a shareholder point of view. Lack of vision and direction makes for a constant state of flux.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your people! I think the post-boom management landscape at Sun has led to a lot of the current problems. Poor managers were never weeded out and the value of good managers was never accounted for. The result, when times were tough, was we didn't have people in leadership and management positions that knew what they were doing.

Great ideas that never get executed

Program Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

ProsFlexible work schedules
Good first level management
Many opportunities to improve processes
Open door policy by most directors and VP's
Good products and ideas

ConsTop level management comes up with decent ideas and never bothers with the details to get them going
Mid level managers hide large problems rather than fix them
Very little working between organizations
Morale terrible

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's a little late now, you should have listened to the problems you had years ago and taken action then, its hilarious to watch you all try and push change now to look good for Oracle when you didn't care for years at a time.

It was great, then it sucked

Staff Software Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsTechnology focused, smart people, can-do attitudes were the norm pre-2000. It was a great place to work - if you saw a problem, you were encouraged to go off and fix it.

ConsAfter the Internet Bubble burst, it seemed like most of upper management bailed out - and was replaced by shortsighted corporate beancounters. Stack ranking became common, along with "rifs" that eliminated the bottom 10%; long term engineering discipline was replaced by "ship it yesterday" attempts at doing something - anything - that might look like it might bring in new customers and revenue.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is sad watching you all grab your payoffs/parachutes as you let the company die - after all, who cares about the 35000 people who worked so hard for so long and now face unemployment or working for Oracle - I'm not sure which is worse.

sigh....

Senior Financial Analyst (Current Employee)

ProsFirst level managers seem to truly care about their employees. Very flexible work schedule; ability to work from home a plus.

ConsExecutive management drove the company into the ground. They didn't move quickly enough to save the company, not wanting to make tough decisions before it was too late. Took the company from a powerhouse to fishfood, about to be swallowed up by the sharks at Oracle.

Great Ideas, Poor Execution

Group Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
Menlo Park, CA

I worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsFlexible work environment, competitive compensation package

ConsConstant re-organizations by executives more concerned with their own careers than the health of the company. Unsuccessful in finding marketing executives who understand both basic marketing and enterprise IT. Marketing strategy too focused on pricing gimicks.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the company instead of yourselves.

They've thrown up their hands. . .

Business Analyst (Current Employee)

ProsSun's a great place for a flexible lifestyle. Work from home, flexible work hours. Geographic flexibility means that you can move up without moving physically (though you may have to fly a little more). Life is definitely a priority over work.

ConsToo many people here are just warming their seats, especially since the Oracle acquisition was announced. Is it uncertainty? laziness? Not sure. Hopefully ORCL is also good at identifying performers, and can get this place rolling again in a hurry.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive some real guidance, as soon as possible! It seems management is too worried about their own jobs to worry about the troops, and we need direction now more than ever!

IT Engagement Manager

Engagement Manager (Current Employee)
Broomfield, CO

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

ProsExcellent benefits and the ability to work from home. For the most part... the people are great to work with.

ConsNo leadership direction and the upcoming acquisition make it very difficult to work there. Layoffs are on the way. Stay away...

Advice to Senior ManagementUnfortunately there is no future there... leadership has given up without really trying. It's a very disappointing situation as Sun had great potential and products.
