Menlo Park, CA

Former Employee – worked at Sun Microsystems full-time for more than 8 years

ProsTerrific culture with lots of autonomy and investment in R&D. Very Global company with strong ties and relationships around the world. Innovative and always on the cutting edge of technology. Real spirit of collaboration and community.

ConsLeadership lost its way. There was no real line of succession and ability to iterate and move forward quickly. Invested too much in 2-3 key verticals to the exclusion of others. Missed the boat completely on commodity computing.

Palo Alto, CA

Former Employee – worked at Sun Microsystems as an intern for more than a year

ProsJunior employees given advanced responsibilities
Most business units staffed by thought-leaders in their verticals
Employees given carte blanche to pursue their own initiatives
Widespread adoption of work from home
Most business units able to iterate rapidly

ConsHighly political corporate culture with little meritocracy despite plethora of talent
Little stability with most employees more preoccupied with job security than their actual job
Bias towards engineering has never been married to successful sales execution
Lack of brand awareness in SMB/SME/LE environments
Executive leadership apparently bent on running company into the ground
