    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

I loved working at Sun, was always proud to call myself a Sun employee. Liked all of the projects I worked on, and got along with all of the people I worked with. Had good friends there, many of whom I stay in touch with.

    Cons

Oracle took over and there was no way I wanted to be a part of that. Many of us heard about how Oracle treated their employees. Half of the people on my previous, and then current, teams left before the acquisition was finalized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to the new management at Sun/Oracle is this: respect your employees, compensate them competitively, recognize good work, and above all show that you appreciate them. No self-respecting person really wants to work there.

Should have developed x86 Solaris sooner. Should have charged for service support.

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Innovation was key. People was pushed to look for out of the box solutions that would bring value to our customers. It was great while it lasted!

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

The company had a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere and was very welcoming to interns. Compensation has competitive with the best of silicon valley.

    Cons

This period was not particularly productive for the company. Fewer products made it to market than should have. Perhaps this was changed by the Oracle buyout.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There leadership has almost completely changed in the last 18 months. Perspective employees should probably research Oracle's leadership reviews for more information.

Former Employee - Director in Menlo Park, CA

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Sun was a fantastic environment for engineers, run by engineers. The company created a collaborative and supportive culture in which innovation was valued and recognized.

    Cons

Unfortunately no-one at Sun could really figure out how to build a sustainable technology business, and compensated by allowing many projects to proceed in the hope that something would work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus and follow-through were required--we tried to do too much with too little commitment, and ended up falling short compared to competitors who were very good at the few things they did well.
