OK place - not totally honest in interviews so beware

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPeople - very smart and mostly helpful. Lots of modern tools.

ConsWork life balance is terrible. It's OK - not to be working as long as your phone and laptop are handy. Expectation is that your life if now dedicated to the customer - not just you work day.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't burn people out. Spend the money to get enough help.

First few years were the best. But after changes in upper management, things went south.

    Systems Analyst (Former Employee)

ProsThe best parts of my experience was, 1) my co-workers and 2) the contact with our clients and the praise we were given by them for the great customer service our department provided.

ConsSunGard has a bad habit of cutting staff at quarter end to meet their budget and if you are not on the ark then watch out the waters get choppy.
A lot of smoke and mirrors with SunGard management.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should keep the promises they make and really listen to their people on front lines and not the middle managers (and some upper managers) who are out to save themselves and their personal minions.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

My experience at SunGard was short but too much reorganization led to layoffs

    Technology Consultant (Former Employee)
    Lombard, IL

ProsThe people were talented and skilled in their positions and eager to share their expertise and bringing a new employee up to speed. The technology was mostly up to date and properly managed.

ConsUpper management was unsure of what direction the company was headed, too many divisions (the result of mergers and acquisitions) made movement in the company difficult.

Advice to Senior ManagementReorganize the company based on industry sectors, merge and sell-off the unprofitable divisions and concentrate the remaining resources on the profitable areas.

    Project Manager

    Project Manager (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsRelation with colleagues were rather good.
It's a very good stepping stone for learning the Financial industry business products from Sungard as you have access to a lot of information that client can't have

ConsLack of share of information internally about company strategy
    Attitude with client
    Unbalanced pool of resources
Weirdly some products are over priced / service and others don't get the level of revenue allowing the adequate level of resources.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore attention to client satisfaction by product.

    High Pressure High Stress Environment

    Network Engineer (Former Employee)
    Thornton, CO

ProsLoved my colleagues, many exceptional engineers.

ConsLower management is petty and plays favorites while upper managements only concern is to make sure that the Blackstone group gets it's cut.
    Soul crushing on-call
Good old boy mentality with director level management and above.
Aging architecture doesn't really align with it's wanting to be state of the art.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend the money to bring in the right tools and technology or sell the business to someone who will.

Poor Management leads to Unhappy Employees

    Consultant (Former Employee)
    Birmingham, AL

Pros- The people I worked with on a daily basis were great.
    - Process and Procedures were well documented and clear. Human Resources "stuff" was always easy to take care of.
    - Benefits and PTO are very good.

Cons- Management (middle and senior level) cannot see past themselves. I am not sure if this "closed minded" philosophy is dictated from the Executive Team, but it exist across multiple segments.
-Failure to reward employees with a pay raise. In my 5 years, never received more then a cost of living raise

Advice to Senior ManagementReconsider the philosophy for performance reviews. The current reviews were a joke and provide zero road map for development.

Underpaid for responsibilities as a Manager

    Practice Area Manager (Former Employee)

Prossmart and intelligent people, excellent experience obtainied in field

ConsLack of strategic direction, not concerned about clients, no backing from senior management

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow people to do their jobs, pay market salaries for management, stop laying off the best talent

    Very corporate and slow-paced

    Marketing Intern (Former Employee)
    Lombard, IL

ProsYou have a ton of free time, and it seems like the management doesn't really care what you do

ConsYou don't do any substantive work

    Not what it once was

    Programmer Analyst (Current Employee)
    Birmingham, AL

ProsVery flexible work environment with relatively low workload stress. A lot of freedom in day-to-day work. Still staffed by good people at the ground level.

ConsWork environment has slipped since the last re-org (from groups by product to groups by function). Some groups are mired in contention over which group is really in charge. Products that aren't growing aren't providing growth opportunities for employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementRefocus on the fundamentals - find problems customers will pay us to solve and solve them.

    Not great but getting better

    IT Manager (Current Employee)
    Birmingham, AL

ProsGreat benefits - generous vacation policy. They seem to have finally heard the complaints of a dissatisfied workforce and are making changes for the better.

ConsLow wages and no raises. No opportunities for upward movement. Both of these are driven by our continual loss of customers to competitors.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit reorganizing; Focus on Customer Service and new products. Stop nickel and diming. How hard should it be for a developed to acquire a $25 piece of software that will enhance productivity.
