Consistent Opportunity to Achieve results

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Wayne, NJ

I have been working at SunGard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThrough the downturn in the economy had my best years in earnings. Ability to work in a flexible wfh and office environment. Opportunity to work with people with significantly different experiences to help me grow my skills. Ability to contribute across business lines like a small company while still working for a big company

Constakes a long time to remove bad managers, Finance/accounting has too much say/internal systems are challenging to work with and need to be improved to facilitate sales

Advice to Senior ManagementValue customer and contact relationships more then geographic lines, show your top performers in revenue you value them as much as the performers who out perform quota by the percentage over quota, improve marketing efforts to return our brand value

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

20+ years going from $50 million to $5 billion in revenue translated to fun, challenges, rewards & some disappointments.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at SunGard

ProsFor many, SunGard was a start up that grew up and matured, so being a part of that was just incredibly rewarding and gave many an opportunity to flourish in an controlled entrepreneurial environment.

ConsAt a macro level, the pros also became challenges and as the Company matured the entrenched management struggled to keep up and adapt. At a micro level, the single largest deficiency is in the area of formal employee training/career development..

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the silos and introduce substantive training/career development, especially management training. The best developer, sales person, customer service rep or accountant does not necessarily make the best manager.

Wow

Solution Architect (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I worked at SunGard

ProsSunGard is at times an amazing place to work, and then you get the other extreme where you want to just shake your head in astonishment at some decisions. More often that not, you get an opportunity to work in an international setting and those Sungard colleagues sitting across from you are smarter than you, more experienced than you, and knows everything about you before you even sat down. Then you recognize how cool and down to earth almost everybody is and you get on with it. You always learn something new everyday.

ConsI'll list in no particular order:
1)Its huge - 23,000 employees around the world.
2)Its fragmented - Very large segments all vying for the attention and budget/compensation dollars. 3)There's a reorg every year - new managers every year, new expectations.
4)Very top heavy
5)BS routine about "titles don't really matter" - really?

Advice to Senior ManagementYou've got really great people working at SunGard. They are a dedicated and professional bunch. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

Application Support at SunGard

Applications Support (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at SunGard

ProsLarge well-established company with a good reputation, yet has a small-company feel since the company consists of a large number of small business units. Good work atmosphere, diverse workforce, many talented co-workers, interesting products and projects. Strong vision at the executive management level.

ConsIt can be difficult to gain visibility with management above your immediate supervisor since the organization tends to be very hierarchical. Not easy to learn about opportunities in other business units since each unit is self-contained.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a way of sharing information and job opportunities across business units; provide a way of rotating people into other assignments across business units to increase retention and cross-fertilization.

Fragmented consulting practice

Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at SunGard

ProsThe unit I worked in had lots of bright people who cared a lot about their work- but started to slide downhill soon after I joined. People were more than willing to lend a hand and teach, and quite fun to be around.

ConsAttrition was significant during the time I was there. People (including myself) left for greener pastures, on the whole, so I've got to think that the Sungard experience was solid as a stepping stone.

The company, during my time there and as far as I could see, was an amalgam of separate, small business units who didn't communicate much even though they worked on similar things.

Advice to Senior ManagementPaying below-market wage contributed to attrition, as did a promotion/bonus system that was not transparent. Since I've left, I think progress has been made in the business unit I was with towards working with other parts of the firm.

Great company with a major downside.

Junior Consultant (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at SunGard

ProsThe flexibility to work from home and from any city is a great advantage. This is huge from a savings point of view as well as to balance work/life balance. The bosses are very supportive and understanding of you and your family situations. This makes it easier to relate and mention any thing to them. The perks are extremely good and the company is very nice in giving whatever is needed without asking questions. The important thing here is the word "asking". This shows that the company knows what an employee needs and therefore reduces severe time and uncomfortable situations.

ConsProfessional growth is very limited due to less jobs at the top. I know employees who have worked for almost 5 years in the same position. This is a serious issue as it leads to low morale and hence less productivity.

Secondly, as we are in a very niche segment, knowledge cannot be transferred to any other company. This is a major hindrance because for any reason if someone wants to leave, getting a job makes it extremely difficult.

Thirdly, training provided is very limited as everyone is extremely busy. all new employees are expected to jump in and learn on the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease create a system for promoting employees and setup milestones if needed.

You benefit at SunGard if you do the work

QA Tester (Current Employee)
San Mateo, CA

I have been working at SunGard

ProsAs a long tenured employee if SunGard, I have seen many changes over the years. Overall SunGard is a good place to work. For the most part, the management team has taken the time to develop their skills as managers. I receive regular feedback on how I am performing and what I need to do to receive a promotion. The team I work with at SunGard are all solid performers and are always willing to give you a hand if you get stuck. WE have learned to work as a virtual team which includes employees from all over the world.

ConsSunGard needs to establish a formal telecommuting policy so all employees are treated fairly.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat all employees farily regardless of location.
