A Great Place to Achieve Anything, but Needs Coherancy

Senior Business Analyst (Current Employee) Boston, MA

ProsSunGard encourages its employees to be entrepreneurial. This creates many opportunities within the company, you just need to be savvy enough to take them!

ConsSunGard is very decentralized with "silos" of individual companies, most of them retained through acquisitions. This leads to a very disorganized central management and makes it very difficult to get aggregated information that applies to the company as a whole. Since the purchase by Silver Lake Partners, this has slowly changed somewhat, but it is still very difficult to find a centralized repository for any information. In addition, due to acquisitions, benefits are very disparate between divisions and often between employees within the same division, depending on when their unit was acquired.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management needs to be more engaged with their employees. It's very difficult for those of us in the trenches, so to speak, to achieve a "big picture" view of what's going on. The separation and unavailability of information between units makes it difficult to understand how things ought to be working or why things are working the way they are.

Good work-life balance, poor career opportunities

Business Analyst (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe work-life balance is probably the best I've had in my career. And for around a year, there's the ability to learn both the technological and business-based aspects of your role.

ConsOnce you've been in the job a while, boredom tends to creep in. There is realistically very little chance of career progression owing to the acquisition-based nature of the company, meaning teams work in silos without much interaction across products, let alone departments and divisions. The compensation package is not fantastic, but owing to the good work-life balance, it's acceptable. Senior management can be based in another part of the globe, meaning you don't have any contact with them from one year to the next.

Advice to Senior ManagementCareer progression for employees needs to improve, otherwise good talent will always be on the look out for jobs elsewhere. Senior management needs to improve interaction with it's staff.

Good company to settle down. Not sure after the acquisition by Datatel

Senior Engineer (Former Employee) Bangalore (India)

ProsThe higher education sector - Laid back, Life - Work balance (i know), excellent opportunities for learning for freshers, safe for women

ConsThe typical in any small organization. long term-ers and politicians.. as long as you are not wronging anyone, it's a good organization to be there.

The company is not what it used to be

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere are still some good projects to work on.

ConsManagement really doesn't care about employees. Pay is becoming lower and lower day by day. This company used to be among the best paying ones, now sadly, even TCS can pay better than them.

Advice to Senior ManagementGain back your clientbase.

Good Sales organization poor sense of strategy or direction

    Senior Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGood Sales organization, Overall Good and well meaning people and great breadth of products + nice recognition program for successful sales

ConsNot enough R&D expenditure and overall too many acquisitions that have resulted in a lack of shared culture and in a great difficulty to understand the company's offer. No real product strategy either and a definite lack of enthusiasm.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on Financial Middle-Office and Back-Office which are the core strenghts of the company and shed the rest. Define a product strategy backed up by a serious R&D budget
Make sure the customers and employees have a sense of direction for the company.

    Specialist /Principal Software Engineer"Bangalore

Specialist Product Development (Current Employee) Bangalore (India)

ProsCompensation and benefits are better compare other Services company like Infy, Wipro, TCS etc.

To an extent flexible work timings but that too depends on your total tenure with company and whom you are reporting to. You can get very good deal if you bargain.

Here your salary review is done twice a year and at times you may get mid year increment. Performance payout is good , and almost 80 % of people at least manage to get minimum of 110 % of base case mentioned in the letter and almost 80% of people get 10% average hike a year. At times they pay even up to 250 % of what is mentioned in the letter.

If you are put in right project they work life balance would be excellent. You can spend time on self learning, on your family and meet to targets easily.

ConsAt times you get tired with doing same monotonous work. You exposure to latest technology will be very less.

There are two many managers/lead per developers and majority of them are redundant non techie guys who do not add any value and simply do people management and at times they do not even do that.

Very less onsite opportunities, specially for longer term.

If your product is terminated / sunset then it difficult to find a place for you on another project/product. Job security is less but they give good retrenchment money.

Advice to Senior ManagementVery very average static management. They are slowly running company like a service base company instead of product base company which may earn some revenue but good things of being product company are gone.

Company may come up with IPO by 2015 and to increase the face value, they are selling of lots of less performing assets.

    Very sales centric organisation

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Singapore (Singapore)

ProsGreat place to work if you are self motivated and strive to create and add value to the company. Open working environment with generally very helpful colleagues who are willing to aid and guide people who are willing to learn and contribute

ConsVery sales centric with an obsession with hitting targets and revenues. Organisation is made up of several companies bought over time leading to messy silos and overlapping products. Middle managers are overwhelmed with daily responsibilities on top of managing teams making it easy for incompetent staff to hide and shirk responsibilities.

Advice to Senior ManagementSunGard is a very global organisation with a lack of culture due to a large geographical spread of offices and an obsession with selling. Consider grooming talents within the organisation to build a stronger culture (and eventually stronger managers) rather than rely on the experienced workforce who have no loyalty and flutter to the next higher paying vendor.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
