I worked at SunGard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Had own office, dress very casual (polo shirts, jeans), Thursday morning breakfast paid for by the company, a lot of excellent training. Pay and benefits were excellent as well.

    Cons

The application was originally written in VFP with SQL Server back end. I was to help fix bugs and add minimal new functionaly as a .NET team was put together to convert the VFP app to .NET. The VFP application was extremely terribly written and dealing with it day in and day out was a real mess and extremely frustrating knowing we were only keeping it alive long enough for the conversion to .NET. The leadership struggled with this setup. Especially since new features were being added to the VFP applications. It was going to be a very long process and left after one year. I couldn't deal with attempt to fix a mess and at the same time adding features that would sometimes break other areas of the application. Biggest mess I've ever seen.

I worked at SunGard (More than a year)

    Pros

The structure is very flat, and it allowed me to get face-to-face interaction with not only managing directors, but also executives at clients.

    Cons

The risk consulting group was very small and not well-integrated with the rest of the firm. Also, senior management of the firm, while approachable, was headquartered on a different continent.

    Advice to Management

Have senior management in the US, integrate acquired groups, cross-leverage sales forces, and provide a structured training program for new hires.

    Pros

Compensation was good, plenty of physical resources.

    Cons

Extremely poor management, Inconsistent, illogical and arbitrary decision making patterns and ever changing policies suited for the short term convenience of the powers-that-be. Performance reviews of very poor quality. Cliquish and hyper-political work environment.

    Advice to Management

Get some backbone, roll up your sleeves and engage with your committed employees.

    Pros

Good benefits, and 401k match (50% of your first 6%). Good people in the Burlington office, they bring in lunch once a week.

    Cons

Lots of layers of management. They have at least 15 different people with a COO title in various different groups. As a PreSales Engineer your job is to help close new business and assist in up selling existing accounts. Once the deal is closed and the account is transitioned to Professional Services it's out of your hands, however due to an issue with the product that could have been fixed, but the COO of one of the smaller software groups chose not to fix the client took advantage of an out clause and the COO decided to claw back $5,000 in commission that had already been paid.

Able to work remotely with unmatched schedule flexibility, Adequate benefits.

Negligible annual salary increases. They frequently change lines on org charts thinking that in and of itself will improve results. Surprisingly poor internal systems.

    Pros

It is a very sales focused organization. They do a good job enabling your ability to close the deal

    Cons

It was challenging to get them to investment into special projects to advance the technology. We started to fall behind to competitor technology

    Advice to Management

Invest more into internal growth opportunities, not just external ones.

    Pros

The people are great, hard working, and dedicated. I rarely had to coax anyone into going the extra mile because everyone put in their fair share and more to get the work done. I will gladly offer myself as a reference to anyone who worked with me or on one of my teams.

    Cons

Disorganized but getting better. The Professional Services group is going through a seemingly annual push to try to standardize processes without adopting any formal methodologies. Goofy counseling family approach to ratings and feedback. Lack of security... it is hard to find people there who are not in fear of losing their job.

    Advice to Management

See your investments through in both systems (e.g. JIRA, PIER, SharePoint) and personnel. Sour grapes here but if you have to cut someone lose, take a few moments to wish them well. I heard from dozens of colleagues, customers, and former bosses. Not a peep (okay, maybe one small peep) from my management.
