    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't expect new tellers to be perfect when you only give them 3 days on the job training.

I have been working at SunTrust

    Pros

"Good pay, nice group of people, benefits were good. Great clients in a wonderful area"

    Cons

"The goals were not explained well at intereview, the purpose is supposed to be about meeting client needs but the reality is about funding your incentive. Mid level management is strictly bottom line focused without regard for anything else. Alot of back-stabbing to attain goals Management has obvious favorites"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The incentive plan is quite involved and confusing as well as difficult to attain

I worked at SunTrust full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good place to work if you have a good manager. Pay is very good. There are MANY excellent people there.

    Cons

SunTrust rates you on a scale of 1 to 5 in your performance review (5 being the best). I was told by one manager that he/she was not allowed to give me a 4 or 5 even though my performance rated such an evaluation due to the fact that SunTrust allows only a certain number of 4's and 5's, and requires a certain number of 2's. So if everyone in your area is doing a fabulous job, somebody is going to get a low rating anyway and very few will get above a 3 (acceptable). No surprise that this does not boost employee morale. I doubt this is widely known among most employees. I have never heard this from HR. But it would explain some evaluations I have received in years where I have done an exceptional job.

There are too many IT projects with such aggressive timelines that many projects are simply scheduled to fail. More than 1 manager assumes when these aggressive dates are in danger, it is time for staff to work nights and/or weekends.

Strong emphasis on the efficiency ratio tends to drive up the working hours and stress.

SunTrust has a corporate wide employee opinion survey in which employees rate many parts of their job, their managers, and the company. I have heard that managers in multiple areas tell their teams to give them high ratings. (I myself have heard the implied "or else".) In my opinion, that survey is a joke. Too many managers only deal with low ratings by telling their employees to give higher ratings, or it is the employees' fault for not doing a better job improving their managers. SunTrust is wasting money paying some company to do this employee opinion survey that has no validity.

Like most companies, SunTrust has stopped the pension and keeps cutting back on health insurance. When SunTrust dropped the pension, the company did increase the 401K contribution.

While SunTrust keeps saying how much the company cares about employees, the corporate actions have convinced me that senior management really cares about their bonuses and the stock price.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reconsider how performance evaluations are done. Performance evaluations should be based on actual performance.

    Set realistic project dates.

Ditch the corporate employee opinion survey OR make ALL the managers and ALL the senior executives read, or reread, the book, "First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently" to learn the real purpose of the survey.

I worked at SunTrust full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    You get a check...
    Good Training

    Cons

    * Have to pay for your own parking out of pocket, not reimbursed (was not told prior to accepting position)
    * Incentives constantly changing, not even worth the extra work
    * Management is a joke
    * No career advancement
    * Very high turn over. There's a new training class every month
    * Systems are very old and out dated
    * Outsourcing many departments, but pretends like they don't know whats going on

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Start valuing your employees more. Especially those on the front line that have direct contact with your customers
    * Evaluate the people you have in management. There's no reason why management has no answer when asked and is so uninterested in helping with a career development plan/ career track.....(People aren't around long enough to advance I guess...)
    * Start investing in more of an updated system that can make the customer experience more streamline, rather than those virtual tellers that no one uses. People go to branches for human interaction, not a virtual chat
    * Stop trying to keep up with the big banks and just be the good neighborhood bank you really are, that's why people bank with Suntrust in the first place

I have been working at SunTrust full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Salary and benefits were decent, Good feeling when you are able to help clients reach a goal, ie buying a new car, saving for their child's college, etc.

    Cons

No individuality is allowed - there is a script to follow whether speaking with clients, or your employees, or even when attempting to express concerns to management. It is difficult to work in an environment where you feel as though your superiors simply read lines to you instead of speaking like an actual human being.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Micro-management does not work. There is a difference between coaching and helping, and micromanaging and belittling. The latter does not promote success. And please, speak to your employees as people, and have legitimate conversations.

    Pros

the compensation is fair, i guess

    Cons

This company uses outside agencies to rate performance or harass customer service representatives. Fake customers call in with phony account numbers and will try to trick representatives. This information is used to promote those that they want to keep or harass those that they want to resign
