I have been working at Sungard Availability Services full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn quickly across a wide breadth of services/solutions

    Cons

Under staffing results in long hours and very high volumes of work for the existing employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure that you are compensating your high performers in line with the market (or even more, given the long work hours and heavy workload expected of Sungard employees). Be proactive about it. Don't wait until they say they are leaving (by then it is too late).

I have been working at Sungard Availability Services part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

work from home for some indiviuals, work over time for contractors and get benefits for full time employees. The package is okay but it could be better. Do not get time in a half for working overtime if you are full time.

    Cons

No communication within organzation, high school way of thiking, you have certain groups that only help each other for promotions and if you fit their morals or values then you get promoted. Management do not commuicate with the people who are under them and they just give orders. If you have the same culture and vaules as them then you will suceed. They will work you to death and if you have a life outside of this job then this place is not for you. If you don't be married to this job, are not available 24/7 then go somewhere else and even you work hard still promotions are rare. There is a high burn out rate, people do not work here very long, turn over rate is increasing and only if HR would listen to the needs of the employees who leave. But they will just replace you with some one else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

higher people who have educution and not just because they are your friends or have the same ethinical background as you. Stop higher high school graduates to lead, take control if they have no leadersipp skills or education background. It does not make sense to have someone in charge of people who graduated from college with a degree or have certifcations. The growth of the company won't grow if you do not listen to your employees.

    Pros

    Availability to many different technologies.

Salary/Compensation is at or above market

    Cons

Product development is nonexistent and lacks forward thinking.

Outsourcing strategy has not worked. India is no longer a cost savings initiative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a few new products and stabilize the current service offerings.

    Pros

Many many many Executives to talk to when you are not busy.

A tremendous amount of technology from which to learn.

    Cons

I just escaped from my jail cell. If you get this message send food and water.

Many changes occurring to get the Business righted. Those that resist change would not survive here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop holding meetings to ask employees ideas just so you can complete a checklist item to cash in your bonus at the end of the year. Asking for advice and then ignoring it gets old.

    Pros

Good pay & benefits. Excellent place for workaholics and micro-managers. It's not the absolute worst place to work.

    Cons

High employee "burn-out" rate. Horrible work/life balance. Extensive international outsourcing and skeleton domestic crew. No career path growth, no back-filling of past employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement employee advise / feedback. For years upper management has been engaging employees in "feel good" sessions, but discussions are just all talk. If you haven't already noticed your good talent is starting to formulate their exit strategies.

    Pros

Teams can be a tight knit group. Your opinion of the company will depend heavily upon the dynamics of your team and of your manager. Sungard AS has some really bright folks. Some of my closest friendships are with the people I work with.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and politics. For a company so small, they have a lot of big company politics. It is a shame because a company the size of Sungard AS should be nimble and they are not. I believe this holds the company back.

Limited career growth. Poor raises and no bonus for the technical staff that is keeping the ship afloat. Too much effort on trying to look good to outsiders and not enough effort on actually being better for the insiders. If you convince the insiders that you are a good company that respects its employees and cares about its customers, they will sell it for you to the outsiders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with a plan and stick with it. Stop doing major re-orgs every 12-24 months. It is very disruptive. It makes your employees think you lack vision and you are desperate to come up with a magic formula to fix the problems. You can't keep throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

CEO needs to stop telling people things are bad but with everyone putting their noses to the grindstone, the turnaround is right around the corner. We have been hearing that gloom and doom messaging for years. It is always the same message and it hurts morale. People are doing all they can and it still doesn't seem like it is enough.

Stop cutting perks to your people and telling them that you're bringing things in line with the rest of the industry. Be an industry leader!! Make people want to come and work at Sungard AS. Make people want to stay at Sungard AS. You don't attract or retain talent by treating people poorly and telling them that you're doing things to match the rest of the industry. If you are like the rest of the industry, then people will question why they work here. Be a differentiator.

    Pros

Good solid company to work for based on the growth path and the changes that are occurring to become an end to end IT services company!

    Cons

The mid management team is still around from back in the dark ages and fights subtly against any new initiatives to change the game so that they might have t learn something new!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Definitely need some more new blood and better retention programs to speed up the recovery!
