Sinking faster than the Titanic. Cannot hire or retain quality because new hires quit after a week.

I have been working at Sungard Availability Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are an incompetent middle manager, you will definitely go very far at this company, especially if your mentor is an equally incompetent Director or VP.
If you are as equally skilled at shirking responsibility as you are at taking credit for the stellar results achieved by the team you manage (when you decide on those rare occasions not to work from home in your pajamas), you will go far with this company.
If you are a misogynistic follower of radical Islam and believe that the women who work for you should not voice their opinions, you will go far with this company.

Nothing like working with a cross-functional team on a Thursday and then learning the next Monday that 75% of the people you just worked with were terminated the previous Friday.
It is just so great to continually be overworked because the managers who are supposed to be supporting and helping us meet our organizational goals are on back to back "productivity" conference calls four hours a day at least.

    Cons

There are over fifty persons who have titles like VP of Sales, SVP of Sales, EVP of Sales and yet each has fewer than five people reporting to them, or should I say "him", as this company absolutely refuses to promote more than a token handful of females into upper management. Customers are leaving left and right because their Sales person changes with the seasons.
Middle and upper management is entrenched and settled in for a long drawn out battle, which they expect to win since they have been with the company long enough to know where the bodies are buried.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting radical Islamic beliefs...women are just as competent (often more) as the men you are hiring and going out golfing with (for team building of course, in the middle of a busy work day, leaving the non-favored to pick up the slack).
Stop trying to please everyone by setting conflicting organizational goals and only telling certain people what they are. You should not tell one business unit to tell a customer that they cannot have a specific service or product until they pay for it and then tell a different business unit that the customer must always be given what they want, when they want it, or they might take their business elsewhere.
News flash!!! Customers ARE taking their business elsewhere, because of this company's managerial incompetence.

    Pros

Great schedule and days off. $.25 sodas. Most of the employees are great people and work hard.

    Cons

Management is horrible. If you are not part of the crowd, you will get no where. Management broke promise after promise for the 7 years I was there. If your dad is a VP you will probably get promoted. Processes are not documented, and are verbally communicated. Processes change daily. Micromanagement is at peak levels. Supervisors are not technical, and can not answer questions. They are friends with the director though, so that must be a good thing. The director has no clue about technology and came from the food industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all managers and supervisors. Find management that has real experience. Stand up for your employees, and grow a spine.

    Pros

Fellow co-workers were the best, they were extremely professional. You get to learn the new technologies on your own as they do not offer any formal training. Everyday was different, working with the clients was nice.

    Cons

Upper management was never in touch with the data centers. It appears that their only concern is themselves and not their employees or customers. The outsourcing to India was a terrible move. No formal training program. Middle management needs to get rid of their microscopes and let the workers do their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have no advice to management. If I did, they would not listen or take action anyway.

I have been working at Sungard Availability Services

    Pros

Great people and great potential. If you like high tech you will get a lot of it here. The new stuff is bleeding edge. You learn a lot which makes you a marketable person if needed. Can be rewarding since it makes a difference to the customers.

    Cons

Very poor communication which is pretty much non-existent. Treats people like a disposable asset and does not invest in them much. HR functions are terrible. Everyone is always on the edge about the next round of layoffs. You work a lot of hours, and it impacts work/life balance. Not sure what the future will bring. The good people seem to be leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your employees. Given them hope. Put qualified senior managers in place who really know there stuff. Many of the current ones really don't know what they are doing.

    Cons

Same as every company Management are on ego trips playing follow the leader, There aren't Many Born Leaders, they don't realize how much respect they lose by being puppets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people, try to swallow your pride and listen.

    Pros

Work-life balance is decent, but only b/c there is no urgency or direction in the organization. People on the front-lines truly care and are doing a heroic effort in removing the water from the titanic. Middle mgmt is smarter than leadership.

    Cons

Very bad corporate culture and leadership. No strategy only fire-fighing. Revenue continues to decline & no one seems to care. "Org changes", "consolidations", "re-alignments" every 2-3 months. Reductions in headcount are their only way to hit budget. Leadership team is out to paint a rosy picture to investors in order to maximize their valuation in selling the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either inspire your employees with a development road-map aligned to the companies strategy or leave.

    Pros

Great peers. Good career opportunities since many people leave.

    Cons

Worst management and corporate culture. Lack of vision. Rampant favoritism while ignoring real issues. Big corporation feeling. Revolving doors. It's hard to recommend it to a friend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build a more progressive corporation. Allow employees to be innovative. Hold everyone accountable for THEIR productivity as well as short comings. Hopefully better days are ahead.
