I worked at Sunrise Senior Living full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The residents were amazing. You could learn a lot about yourself and others. I met great friends and people there.

    Cons

I worked really long hours and management still didn't care about us or the hard work we did. Management tried to fire me for a lot of write ups I had and they said I signed them... I did not. The care staff is underpaid for the work that they do. There was only 1 bonus of $25 dollars for thanksgiving. The raises were bare minimal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to appreciate your staff. Please don't lie to get staff fired. Maybe offer a decent raise.

I have been working at Sunrise Senior Living

    Pros

Initial encouragement lasted about 2 months.

    Cons

Training was not adequate. Management does not recognize any contributions that are made by employees. Understaffed! Too Nuh pressure with added responsibilities because management is not organized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employee input and treat us with respect. Provide ad square training.

I have been working at Sunrise Senior Living full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is an extremely fast paced company with high expectations. If you are smart and self-motivated, you can be very successful. There are many opportunities to learn. Company is huge therefore if you need to relocate, chances are you could find a job in another Sunrise. They are clustered around most major US metropolitan areas.

    Cons

You are only as good as last week's financial results, you constantly have to prove/explain yourself. There is no support for directors. Regional teams are stretched thin and focus on putting out fires. Poor work life balance. Very political. Has changed from public company to private, and has changed owners every few years, which causes frequent reorganization. Regional and corporate jobs are therefore very vulnerable to layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Aside from the front line team members, your community management teams (coordinators and EDs) are your most important players. There is very high turnover in these positions, mainly Executive Directors, Health Care Coordinators and Directors of Sales due to an immense amount of pressure and lack of support. Many regional team members and Vice Presidents are rude, not responsive and not trustworthy. Training and support for EDs and coordinators is not a priority for the regional teams, they are more worried about that week's financial/sales results These are essential to the success of the communities.

    Pros

The best reasons to work here are the residents! They come from all walks of life and from all over the place! They are such a joy to sit and talk to. You can learn so much from them. It is very easy to fall in love with them!!!

    Cons

The challenges were the unfairness to the staff and inconsistencies in professionalism. New management created a way to weed out and them replace staff by being very critical and unfair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more keen to what is really going on and be more sensitive to what the employees go through.

The fundamental principles of the company are appropriate, but they are not implemented in an effective way.

I have been working at Sunrise Senior Living

    Pros

My co-workers are hard working and dedicated, and the quality of life for residents is overall higher than other places I have worked.

    Cons

Management does not always make decisions that benefit their staff, in fact a lot of times it is the opposite. They try to give their employees a voice but when you try and speak up they usually don't listen or take your concerns seriously. Expect to be short of staff and get hours cut frequently because management doesn't fill the rooms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As an employee, I often feel we get the short end of the stick for managements downfalls.

    -Underpaid.
-If they don't like you, you get few hours on the schedule.
    -moving up isn't that easy
-the amount work assigned is not worth the pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is horrible! Majority of caretakers and med-techs are priceless. Sunrises principles are admirable.

    Pros

The residence! I loved the residence I worked with and they loved me in return. They will always remain in my heart. I so respected the families that were actively involved with their loved ones lives. I will always remember those coworkers that went above and beyond to care for residence who can not take care of themselves. Those workers are priceless and deserve to be treated with respect and to be compensated. No one will care for your loved one like those that I knew.

    Cons

Management could care less of their employees. I took the job because I was impressed with the respect and care that the front end staff took care of the residence. Management plays favorites and takes away hours from wonderful employees and promotes the staff that does nothing. One employee sat all day and read on her IPad, was texting, or watching TV. One bad apple but she tormented the other employees who felt they could not defend themselves for fear of their job. I left because my hours were cut to accommodate the managers favorite who was loosing her job. Many others hours were cut who were did not fit in with the cliche. I did not mention that when I left I found I was not paid all of my wadges. Neither management nor corporate are willing to take care of this matter which I have been pursuing for going on three months now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotion had less to do with the quality of work but how good friends you are with the manager. If you were not in their particular group you have no hope. No chance to move up in mine location. Stop promoting employees with bad behavior just because you happen to be in the same class. Treat people fair even if they are of difference cultures and nationalities. Hire managers who are management material. Corporate needs to be more diligent and do secret assessments especially in the reminiscence ward. Arlington management horrible.
