I worked at Swift Transportation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Large company, able to handle a lot of freight, decent equipment, many terminals to park, great way to see the country!

    Cons

Large company, do not become an owner operator, not much time home, not much room for growth, dedicated accounts take priority over everything.

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You have the potential to make a very decent living if you work 7 days per week.

    Cons

You have to reach your numbers or you are written up and terminated and you probably will not be promoted as they choose only friends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The managers we currently have are overly concerned with how they look. They are not available to assist. You can hear them talk negatively about people they do not like. they have all been there for a long time and it wont change. the HR people do not do much when you go to them about the stuff

Company Driver and Owner Operator on a Dedicated Account.

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A select few office personnel at the terminal, and most of the on site staff for the dedicated account are good people. Nearly all the drivers are friendly and possibly overly helpful.

    Cons

People are friendly in a sort of adversarial way... a camaraderie similar to that of mutineers under an oppressive captain. Though just like those nefarious sea captains of old, the management doesn't really "know" they are doing wrong by the drivers. They just follow a philosophy that puts drivers at the bottom of the totem pole, and we feel it.

Terminal shop staff are kept at notoriously low levels, mainly by hiring freezes and low pay which drives away quality techs. Pay for company drivers on non dedicated accounts might be on par with the other major carriers, but it's 20-50% lower than smaller carriers, especially ones who focus on driver retention. Pay for owner operators is only about 5% lower than national average, and with the right driver leader/manager you can make all the money you can want to... but you lose out if that person leaves because Swift pays Driver leaders over 10k less per year than the national average.

Dedicated accounts are available to company drivers, and occasionally owner operators (mostly O/O teams). Unfortunately Swift seems to refuse to go to bat for it's drivers when faced with customer failures that provide a major impact upon the drivers. For example, one dedicated customer implements a load automation system that changes physical location of the Distribution Center as well as load routing... changes that would normally initiate a contract renegotiation... this automation was designed with major errors that need to be fixed at the software level, but Swift does nothing to attempt to pressure the customer to make these changes. Even though these problems created major issues drivers themselves have to deal with and ultimately lose the customer millions of dollars per year in labor inefficiency. On top of that another carrier used inside information to under bid Swift by a penny resulting in the loss of sometimes 20 routes per day... where was Swift executive management to call foul? No where.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your drivers better, pay your driver support members better, and

I worked at Swift Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed the work I was doing.

    Cons

Poor management in the shop created difficult work environment and no room for advancement. Swift/Central merge was not smooth and information was not given to employees. Lost over 120+ hours of PTO when I left after 4 years of service. Did not inform employees they would lose their accumulated PTO when they left after the company merged. All hours are paid at straight time (no time and a half for over time hours worked).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure people have opportunity to advance within the company. Identify poor managers in the shop and keep them from holding good employees back from advancement.

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Most people are friendly, funny, and great co-workers. That's about all I can say for this job...

    Cons

Can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Co-workers are fine (most of them, others are lucky Swift doesn't fire anyone). But, let me tell you that the real culture of this company is that everyone hates their job, they show up for EXACTLY their shift, and when their time is up the BOLT out the door.

Seriously... most people are gone by 5, but there are still LINES in the parking lot to get out of here. Nobody cares about doing a good job here, they only care about making it to the weekend.

Worst job ever... which sucks, because I like working in big teams, but Swift is NOT a great atmosphere. It's just depressing here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This isn't 1970 anymore, read a book that came out within the last decade about why people stay at their jobs. Free coffee isn't the answer... powered creamer sucks anyway!

Your "book it and figure it out" mentality is pathetic and everyone in the company despises it.

    Pros

benefits are pretty good and most of the employees are nice and helpful and they try to get you home time when you want it. good started company

    Cons

I have been driving for them for less then a year and am on my 8th truck because they keep breaking down and the truck I have now has been in the shop 4 times for the same thing and it's still not fixed. the pay could be better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get better trucks and listen to your drivers when they say they are having problems with thier trucks and have the guys in the shop fix it right the first time

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent miles for company drivers, most loads are drop and hook.

    Cons

Low pay scale, If you sign a lease with swift you no longer get decent loads, you make just enough to pay truck payment and a few bucks in your pocket. Swift often neglects to pay detention pay, if you follow up with calls and emails you might get it, you might not. All loads are still paid zip code to zip code, not actual miles (always at least 10% shorter than actual).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your drivers honestly and maybe so many won't be quitting all the time.
