Too many cooks in too small of a kitchen

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWork life balance is great, ability to work remote, a wealth of online training

ConsNo on really takes responsibility for decisions. You will have meetings to discuss further meetings. Since everyone works remotely, you wind up with lots of meetings covering status that could be covered in an email. Lots of churn and change. Most people get hired here cause of their company being acquired. It's like being thrown into the ocean without any idea of when you will get to shore

Advice to Senior ManagementI know you are in flux and reorganizing, but you need to communicate more with your employees of your plans instead of just vague insinuations.

Went downhill quick after Enrique Salem

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)

ProsSymantec has always had a good product portfolio. Several products are leaders in their space. Compensation is decent and sales comp plans are adequate.

ConsToo many acquisitions has created some conflicts about the companies purpose and vision. There has been very little integration of the products as well. Senior sales leadership had high turn over and moving up or around in the organization was almost 100% political and had nothing to do with performance.

Advice to Senior ManagementHang on to top performers by promoting them and giving them additional equity in the company.

A Good company on its way down

    Senior SQA Engineer (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsHistorically successful product line which continue to make most of the money for the company.
Some really good products. If you are lucky to be one those teams you get to work on some good technology.

ConsVery unstable Management at every level. Since my joining a couple of years back every one in the hierarchy from my manager to the CEO has either left or fired. There has not been a month without organizational changes.
Not very clear with the future strategy, expected with the frequent management changes.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to get at least some stability in the company.

Big Company Culture, Must Control your own Destiny

    Senior Financial Specialist (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

    ProsCompensation fair
Most people friendly & easy to work with
Lots of opportunity to drive positive change
With effort, you can drive your own destiny and move between groups

    ConsPoor training
    Most managers are not mentors
Finance often works in a silos fighting fires
Communication from the top down can be almost non-existent
Politics drive decisions and many promotions (performance is a factor, but to a lesser extent)
    Poor yearly performance management

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is little to no useful training available, particularly around tools and processes. Doesn't do a lot of good to upgrade all your systems if nobody knows how to utilize them.
Teach your managers how to mentor and lead
Finance should be focused on business decisions, not reporting that isn't required or doesn't add value

Good compensation and benefits - not the best run company

    Product Sales (Former Employee)

ProsSymantec pays well and has solid benefits. There are many talented, customer facing people working in the field. Many of the solutions are well reviewed by industry analysts.

ConsAlthough there are many good managers at Symantec, they are far out-numbered by the bad. Generally the managers closer to the customer are better and those farther removed from the field are the ones responsible for the strategic mis-steps of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementSteve Bennett flattened the organizational structure but the managers he got rid of were the ones closer to the customer. There are still too many managers who look the part but don't know the products and the customers.
The company is too Mountain View centric now with most of the marketing and strategy coming from the west coast. The sales teams are not organized in a very functional manner now unless it is for the purpose of selling off part of the company.

Overall not a bad place to work, frustrating at times but what high tech company isn't

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsLots of talented people wanting to go the extra mile. Definite sense of shared goals, not just individuals in it for themselves. Management in my area are very open to feedback.

ConsChange is constant, often making it difficult to execute as quickly as we could. Working conditions are becoming a lot less flexible especially regarding working from home.

Prossalary and benefits good. Product high quality

ConsPoor executive leadership since the Symantec VERITAS merger. Trying to figure out vision and strategy since the merger. Silo'd!

Advice to Senior ManagementGo big or go home. Time to figure out what we want to be. Get a vision and march to it

    How will this end?

    Sales (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsSymantec has an incredible long history in the technology space. Over the years, it has produced and acquired some of the best industry leading products. There was once a great culture with many talented individuals working towards a common goal.

ConsEither through management fads, terrible integration of acquisitions, and/or attrition of top talent, Symantec now has a mediocre senior management team. There is a genuine fear of not being relevant in the technology space and Symantec needs to innovate and become easier to do business with.

Advice to Senior ManagementAct as if this is the last quarter to turn things around, attract top talent, quit tweaking the system, and start executing. Also, find a celebrity or charismatic CEO that will lead the thousands of employees that are eagerly and patiently waiting to be inspired, otherwise risk top talent leaving.
