I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

It was a great place to work until mgmt screwed it all up. At one time, I thought I would never leave, as it was superb company with a lot of opportunity for growth and development. Will they get to that again? I don't know.

    Cons

Over the last four years, almost everyone I know at Symantec was let go. Literally 4 years of lay offs, which does not make for an enjoyable environment. One day you'd have a new boss, the next day they were let go and you were put somewhere else, that is if you made that round's cut. People bumbled around trying to figure out what their job was for years. I assume now that with the 3rd CEO in 4 years that something new is bound to happen, but I would be wary of going there.

    I worked at Symantec

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are OK at the very minimum, some positions are way over market standards.

    Cons

The company has lost any strategic insight. Management is completely lost. Senior Management has never been able to integrate Symantec and Veritas for the past 9+ years. They have decided to split again and this creates lots of uncertainties for the near future.

    Pros

You can work with some good software engineers, this can improve yourself abilities.

    Cons

The future of company is not clear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The work-life balance is OK, just like the other company's software engineer. The company can improve their benefits.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are a few pros of working at Symantec..

    1. Work life balance is good
    2. Facilities and benefits worldwide are great
    3. You have plenty of opportunities to try different roles within the company.
    4. Compensation is competitive.

    Cons

    - Most products are losing market share because they are either not relevant for the future or competition has out executed Symantec.
    - Weak product roadmaps
    - huge focus on managing bottom line. Not enough focus on driving new and relevant products that would drive meaningful top line growth.
    - significant attrition across all ranks.
    - inexperienced exec management team- outside of Mike Brown and John G, the rest of the BU leaders collectively have less than 10 years of GM level experience.
    - huge distraction coming from the split
    - overall employee morale has hit rock bottom and will lead to more attrition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the new companies post split private. You will not be able to please Wall Street while also trying to bring the business back to health. Focus on innovation and deliver products that are relevant for the future. Recruit and retain key talent. Stop the constant reorgs and RIFs.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and the pay is average for my city. PTO accrual is average. Enterprise security product is still a strong competitor for now.

    Cons

The board seems incompetent. After they fired Bennett, the budget cuts have been horrible and the employee moral has dropped.

    Micromanagement is similar to taylorism.

We have had layoffs causing us to be severely understaffed and overworked.

Many great staff are leaving for other companies.

Huge decrease in opportunities this fiscal year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mike Brown, don't forget about your employees. We are people not slaves or robots.

We need to invest more in innovative security and get that ATP out because competion is fierce.

Give some recognition to support staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean house!!!
Look at what you spend and rid various middle management.
No vision. Stop with the town halls, stop with the back-patting emails.
