I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits and the pay is average for my city. PTO accrual is average. Enterprise security product is still a strong competitor for now.

    Cons

The board seems incompetent. After they fired Bennett, the budget cuts have been horrible and the employee moral has dropped.

    Micromanagement is similar to taylorism.

We have had layoffs causing us to be severely understaffed and overworked.

Many great staff are leaving for other companies.

Huge decrease in opportunities this fiscal year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mike Brown, don't forget about your employees. We are people not slaves or robots.

We need to invest more in innovative security and get that ATP out because competion is fierce.

Give some recognition to support staff.

I have been working at Symantec part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

opportunity to participate in huge transformations: insourcing IT, divesting half the company. if you like lots of change, this is the place to be. Good benefits.

    Cons

so many big initiatives you have to wonder if symantec can do them all. salaries do not seem competitive. 401k matching vests over 4 years. Company is slipping back into silo'd behaviour.

    Pros

    Team can be awesome.
    Flexible work/life balance
Cafe have semi decent food (discounted)

    Cons

    E-com has super low moral.
Red tape is hinders every move
    Management has no vision
    Tribal knowledge is massive here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean house!!!
Look at what you spend and rid various middle management.
No vision. Stop with the town halls, stop with the back-patting emails.
Actually take the good, bad, ugly email serious and show resolution.
Management has no spine with vendors.

I have been working at Symantec full-time

    Pros

Great place to get experience. After the layoffs last year, especially in the accounting/FA dept the atmosphere is getting much better and depts are better able to communicate.

    Cons

Work life balance could be better

I have been working at Symantec (more than an year)

    Pros

The people I work with are wonderful. I was very excited to get a good paying job with such a great selection of benefits.

    Cons

The training and documentation left a lot to be desired, at least for our product. They just did a huge layoff of tech support people across the company, targeting not only weak performers but experienced techs, older workers, and people who used too many benefits this year. They're just looking for ways to make a fast buck, not have quality support or produce quality products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make Symantec a place to retire from, not just a place on a resume.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work wise it is good, some departments do not have opportunity to grow the career. It always depends on which department are you under with and who is your manager to make your life and career better.

    Cons

After having new CEO, new SVP and VP and much more changes in management, the vision of the company is distracted and it does impact individual employee a lot. Lot of people are quitting their jobs because of that. I would not recommend anyone to join this company at the movement atleast until next year, I would say after July 2015.

    Pros

Interesting tech and industry given it is continuously changing -- it's also a very hot-button topic as security relates to all sectors - consumer, business and gov't

    Cons

Tons of office politics. Terrible morale. No leadership. Continuous layoffs, exec departures and new leaders who don't know the business and don't have a clear direction

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need new company vision / direction

A company in the right industry (Cyber Security) but that lack proper leadership to hit its potential

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work flexibility (in some groups / departments)
    On-site Cafeteria (very good food)
    Facilities are good
    Markets with potential

    Cons

Culture vacuum: since the firing of Steve Bennett (previous CEO), there is no clear direction or attention as to where the culture and values of the company are heading.
Compensation is not great (they usually aim at the low-end of the industry benchmark when hiring) and promotions are really scarce.
Whatever is being considered (initiatives, projects, etc), it takes forever to get things done, if done at all. That is something that is really amazing for a high-tech company in a fast pace and changing environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your acts together: change/transformation is good up to a point. After that, it becomes Chaos. And firing a respected and true leader (Steve Bennett) at the beginning of a turn-around for no reason (at least publicly) does not help being credible with employees and most likely customers and investors.
Also, get some respect for employees and stop serving us some external-PR-type (= BS) communication.
