    Pros

Run of the mill job experience. Do not expect a career path unless you are part of management inner circle

    Cons

Too many re-orgs not enough action. Managers are afraid to speak up to senior management. New products/services just rehashes of existing ones but thinking they are progressive.

    Pros

    Compensation
    Location
    Working with brilliant engineers
    Plenty of food
A good place to learn PM fundamentals
Opportunities to grow if you're smart and aggressive

    Cons

    Slow to innovate
    Development cycles too long
    Big company pace and thinking
Cost cutting taking the fun out of the place (no end of quarter drinks, home internet no longer expendable, no more Xmas party, travel cutbacks, hiring reductions, being asked to do more with smaller budgets every year)

I have been working at Symantec full-time

    Pros

Creative and challenging environment, never a dull moment or question that something interesting could happen at any moment. Fantastic opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best and brightest every day.

    Cons

Could be more competitive as far as salary. There's a suggested attitude projected by management that there isn't any chance of advancing beyond where you are right now, so no need to ask...

    Advice to Management

Seems like there's no limit to what is offered C-level execs to lure them from other companies - but great talent down the ranks are leaving because there's "no budget" or plan for promotions...

    I worked at Symantec

    Pros

Lots of intelligent people in the ranks who want the company to succeed.

    Cons

Too many CEO's in too short of time. Each brought in their own new management team with "new" ideas. Many rounds of downsizing. Constant churn was the result.

    Advice to Management

    Think change through carefully.

    Pros

Smart people, exciting/fast-paced industry, well recognized company and brand, good compensation and benefits.

    Cons

Symantec is on a downward slide. A disastrous series of management changes and reorganizations over the last 3 years has caused massive churn of the best leaders and employees and left the company lagging behind competitors. Symantec is no longer a technology leader and the company breakup, although necessary, is exacerbating that. Storage spinout Veritas Technologies probably on the auction block.

    Advice to Management

Too much focus on enterprise customers has resulted in an over reliance on direct salesforce, poor go-to-market optimization and complex, difficult to use products. Without high value storage products to prop up deal size, sales cost will skyrocket post spin-out. Marketing is a disaster and completely unprepared to shift to a more channel/saas optimized business.

    Pros

There will always be a need for backup software.

    Cons

High turnover, large legacy product, management doesn't have foresight or direction.

    Advice to Management

Get managers with technical understanding and be proactive and not reactive.

    Pros

Allows telecommuting depending on supervisor agreeing to it. The benefits are good, but used to be better. More relaxed, very dress casual at satellite sites (engineering, order processing, and such). Less so (more formal) at headquarters in Silicon Valley (Mountain View). Provides on site cafeteria at major sites.

    Cons

CEO's have changed periodically. Company acquired Veritas in 2005, and after a lengthy integration, and synergy/growth not materializing, it now BACKPEDALING, and spinning off that acquisition at the end of 2015, with the same name. Word has it, $'s were paid to some outfit to determine what to name the New Co, and it came out to be the same name of the acquired co. Go figure. Layoffs are done now and then depending on what management thinks is the next best initiative/strategy

    Advice to Management

Good chunk of money being paid to outside consultants to determine what the path forward for the company is, and not working out. Ask for a refund.
