I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Reasonably progressive thinking management that fully embraces and supports agile practices, remote teams, flex hours and locations, etc. Good benefits and bonus plans. Well known products with good reputation. The company is putting a lot of investment into mobile.

    Cons

Company still in transition for more than a year so expect fairly big changes and announcements every month or so. Top management and talent have left, but new blood has come in, still it's hard to hire top talent when competing in the Valley with Google, Facebook, Apple, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to pay the price for top talent, get rid of remaining older corporate processes and complete the transition to being a more competitive, faster moving organization.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

work-life balance is wonderful. show up, sit there and do your day-to-day. they have a decent benefits package. If you're not looking to challenge yourself and are OK with being part of the herd, this is perfect.

    Cons

Terrible management. I should have seen the red flags when my manager would say things like "I don't like managing people" or he would come in and sit at his desk all day with headphones on - not once did he join anyone else for lunch. What kind of company promotes, (that's right he was promoted) a hermit to manage a team of people?!?!? He also didn't mind throwing other people under the bus to save himself. There are no clearly defined expectations, projects are a joke as they serve vague business purposes. The worst part, this company is able to sleep at night after laying off a 5 month old pregnant woman!!! whoa... If you're looking for a company recognizes talent, fosters innovation and creativity while maintaining a moral standard... you're going to want to run far far away from Symantec.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CLEARLY DEFINED EXPECTATIONS are a must. And don't sit down with an employee and give them grades on some stupid chart that was pulled off the internet.

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Talented people that want to do a good job. Pay and benefits are good and the office environment is very nice. Symantec also offers some remote opprtunities which can be a great way to balance your life.

    Cons

Three CEO's in the past three years and two major reorganizations have damaged the culture and the work environment. Strategy keeps changing and people are leaving either by choice or by layoffs. Company is not in growth mode at the moment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a strategy and stick to it.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The work-life balance was good. The people were nice. There is brand recognition, the compensation is good. Hours are usually flexible and telecommuting is often ok. The company is very ethical.

    Cons

Software development has been largely outsourced, and this is not the place to go to work with new and exciting technology. There is an old boys club mentality throughout the company, and there are many large, geographically distributed groups that don't often collaborate or work well together.

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Depending on the team you're in, you might get to work with extremely talented engineers, and on products which actually make a difference out there.

    - Work/Life balance is very good.

    Cons

    - Clueless management, with continuous change of direction.

    - Managers who clearly are not doing a good job get inexplicable promotions.

    - Many people got too comfortable on the job, and they don't deliver.

    - Average Market salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Focus on few key aspects and keep the same direction for more than 6 months.

    - Identify the best and the brightest, and make sure they stick around.
