Surprised!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Symetra full-time for less than a year

ProsI was not sure of what to expect when I joined.
I feel empowered to make changes. My management listens to me and lets me run with my ideas.
Location is great - lunch time options are plenty.

ConsThere are people from old school, resistant to change. Office views are great but indoor space feels a little dated. Could invest in some new carpets.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to support and recognize employees and their good work.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Personally, I am very happy at Symetra but I do understand why others may not be.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Symetra full-time for more than 3 years

ProsEnergy, attitude, and collaboration drive me to be passionate about my work and I am encouraged and empowered by my manager to contribute at the level I want. I think the work/life balance exists and the people I work with on a daily basis are talented, hardworking and dedicated. They make my job as a manager easier and I don't feel stifled in finding new ways to reward them and create a more positive working environment (read: offsites and other team building activities).

ConsAs part of a high performing team, we are lean and sometimes I feel like I have to fight a little too hard to reward my people and obtain additional resources. The performance review system needs a complete overhaul but I think this is finally getting some much needed attention. In the meantime, I plan to make liberal use of Symetra's generous spot bonus program to recognize my stars--of which there are many.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a real position to improve morale; no more employee surveys. Just walk around and talk to people. Learn more names, shake more hands, pat more backs and get to know the people who act like owners, but aren't. You have a huge talent pool within Symetra. Find these people and personally listen to what they have to say. They, like me, are vested in this company and know that it has the makings to be a great place to work.

Symetra is a good company!

Manager (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Symetra full-time for less than a year

ProsI've been with the company for less than a year, but wanted to share my thoughts. There are many good things about this company, and more to come. Are there growing pains? Yes. Is it perfect? No. Having said that, you get what you give. If you are a hard worker and contribute, you'll be rewarded, which will lead to satisfaction. If not, well, you may gripe about things, which will lead to dissatisfaction. Pros include:

- Excellent location
- A lot of really great people who care about their jobs and the service they provide to our clients
- Good work environment, although it can be hectic at times. We're busy...it's good!
- Lots of potential to progress within the company
- Management is striving to empower people to come up with ideas, to provide suggestions on improving processes, to have a voice (I've noticed that some people thrive when given this opportunity, while others don't speak up). If you don't speak up, you shouldn't gripe.

ConsThere are a few cons:

- We seem to run in a reactive mode - there needs to be a paradigm shift to proactiveness, especially with work volumes
- Some teams seem to work in silos - if there was a more inclusive approach in managing work volumes, I believe the volume of work could be parsed out as needed

Advice to Senior Management- Listen to the folks in the trenches...they have a lot to offer
- Make yourself more visible

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not perfect, but good so far

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Symetra full-time for less than a year

Pros* Great location - near restaurants and the transit center.
* Competitive salary and good benefits package (including 401k match and generous stock purchase plan).
* Good worklife balance.
* Unlike many other companies in the area and/or in the same industry (including the company I left earlier this year), Symetra is in very good financial shape and is actually poised for growth.

Cons* Change management - I'm ok with change, but feel that communication with employees could be better. I do believe that the company is moving in the right direction though.
* Like with most companies, employee experience/morale probably varies a lot by department. I can only speak for my own experience, which has been positive.
* Parking is expensive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management should work harder to communicate with and be visible to their employees.

Nearly five years in the making

Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at Symetra full-time

ProsI worked with a start-up program/ newly forming department; being able to develop creative solutions for those two companies was surprisingly satisfying. I would go so far as to say the experiences in that department contributed to my current career focus.

ConsSymetra is a big business environment; which means plenty of politics and limited candid dialog between company and employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove collaboration; reduce the number of chiefs between AVP's and employees.
