    Pros

Business is booming and they are hiring like crazy. I was able to work on some high visibility projects within different teams at Symetra. I enjoyed learning about the insurance industry and how IT fits in it. I saw a lot of propositions for change within the IT division, time will tell if they follow through with them though. Work life balance for full time employees who were NOT managers seemed to be okay. I would between 40 - 45 hour work weeks. Managers however I saw work 55+ hour work weeks.

    Cons

While it is a smaller insurance company, the culture is still very conservative. Most full time employees in my meetings were 45+ and male. Change is slow and managers and their teams are often siloed. They lose sight of what other teams are working on and how they fit into the bigger picture which leads to lack of motivation to do their best work. I am eager for them to chose a CIO. I feel that the IT division will greatly benefit from a full time and dedicated CIO who can best represent the division and its projects. Pay is not on par with other companies in the area. I would suggest they raise the salary for IT interns to make the program more competitive with other companies in the Seattle area.

    Advice to Management

Grab IT interns before they go off and find other employment after completing an internship at Symetra. The IT industry is very hot in Seattle right now and you will lose good potential full time employees by sitting on your hands and waiting until the last minute to give them an offer.

    Pros

Opportunity, culture, work/life balance. I've worked hard and been promoted 3 times in 3 years. My salary and responsibilities have grown commesurate with my desire to contribute and make a difference. I have a great boss and a team that cares about being a part of something more than just working for a paycheck.

    Cons

Negativity can be a con but this is more about those that have been impacted by necessary changes and tough decisions that need to be made in areas that weren't working, like IT. Company is moving in the right direction in terms of values and culture. Takes time to do things right and a few mistakes will happen along the way. Symetra is definitely learning from their mistakes and moving forward with optimism and a solid vision for where we want to be in 6 years.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in the culture and the advancing the message that your people are your #1 asset.

    Pros

Mid-size company working hard to grow the business and become a national player. Nice location, decent benefits and advancement opportunities. Good people and interesting work.

    Cons

Continual staffing changes make employees uneasy and affects employee engagement.

    Advice to Management

Change is necessary but some sense of stability would improve employee morale. Work on better defining our culture. Senior management seems a bit uninvolved with the rank and file.

    Pros

Management is very flexible about working with your personal schedule, employees work many different shifts. Several product lines to work within. Good benefits, good compensation, great location, and currently improving dated feel of facilities. Company growing at a good rate, many chances for advancement. Current CEO doing a great job growing the all product lines. Good mix of experienced employees and new-comers.

    Cons

Working with life insurance, annuities, or benefits can be tedious at times. Currently shifting some operations and consolidating physical size of departments (smaller work spaces).

    Advice to Management

Would advise against future vacation freezes.

    Pros

Benefits, hours, location, jeans dress code, great people, community involvement, bonus opportunity, recognition program, mentorship ops from employees in industry 15+ years. Hard work and leading by example are rewarded. Industry training, Engagement and personal development are a priority here.

    Cons

Expensive parking, Management communication, Culture in flux, Some veteran employees mentality of entitlement and resistance to change affects culture and morale.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to employees. Invest in manager "leadership" training including 1:1 coaching in departments with the most negative feedback. Budget for more Team building in each work group. Monitor and eliminate nepotism in work groups. Eliminate stack ranking of any kind.

    Pros

I was not sure of what to expect when I joined.
I feel empowered to make changes. My management listens to me and lets me run with my ideas.
Location is great - lunch time options are plenty.

    Cons

There are people from old school, resistant to change. Office views are great but indoor space feels a little dated. Could invest in some new carpets.

    Advice to Management

Continue to support and recognize employees and their good work.

    Pros

I've been with the company for less than a year, but wanted to share my thoughts. There are many good things about this company, and more to come. Are there growing pains? Yes. Is it perfect? No. Having said that, you get what you give. If you are a hard worker and contribute, you'll be rewarded, which will lead to satisfaction. If not, well, you may gripe about things, which will lead to dissatisfaction. Pros include:

    - Excellent location
    - A lot of really great people who care about their jobs and the service they provide to our clients
    - Good work environment, although it can be hectic at times. We're busy...it's good!
    - Lots of potential to progress within the company
    - Management is striving to empower people to come up with ideas, to provide suggestions on improving processes, to have a voice (I've noticed that some people thrive when given this opportunity, while others don't speak up). If you don't speak up, you shouldn't gripe.

    Cons

    There are a few cons:

    - We seem to run in a reactive mode - there needs to be a paradigm shift to proactiveness, especially with work volumes
    - Some teams seem to work in silos - if there was a more inclusive approach in managing work volumes, I believe the volume of work could be parsed out as needed

    Advice to Management

    - Listen to the folks in the trenches...they have a lot to offer
    - Make yourself more visible
