Appraisal process in certain CAE groups is a sham

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsLimited work pressure, good company if you are amongst the ones who just wants to glide through

ConsAppraisal process is a big sham in IG CAE groups. There's no correlation between the feedback you receive and evaluation of your performance by your peers. This is indeed very disappointing. You can receive excellent peer feedback and yet have a stagnated career, just because your management doesnt like you. In my previous company, we had a 360 degree feedback system where the feedback about the managers was collected from the reports and provided to the managers for bettering their performance. However, in Synopsys, there's nothing like a 360 degree feedback system, only your managers can evaluate you, your opinon of your managers does not matter, They are ridiculously empowered.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive engineers a fair opportunity to evaluate the managers

Do not recommend a CAE role

    Staff CAE (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

    ProsGood benefits
    Staff is mostly friendly
    No micromanagement
Work from home is not encourage, but permitted (privileges depend on whether you are in good books of the VP)

ConsLeft the company as the work is boring and there is no growth or appreciation for the CAE work in IG CAE org.
Sucking up helps in this company
Poor bonuses and salary increments compared to the industry standard

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease try to reduce the bureaucracy and recognize and reward real talent.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Peformance evaluations/reviews/appraisals in Synopsys, a BIG BOGUS

    (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

    Pros-A reasonably stable company
-Allows working remotely and flex time
-If you are titled "CAE" and you dont perform, be rest assured that you wont be fired.
If you are titled "CAE" and are among the performers, be rest assured you will not be rewarded in anyway.
All CAEs in Synopsys are put into one big bucket when it comes to performance evaluation

Cons-Peformance evaluations/reviews/appraisals in Synopsys are a BIG BOGUS
-opportunities for professional growth and career advancement are extremely extremely limited
-There are plenty of folks in our CAE groups who clearly have no work charter, they just come to work browse, chat and go home and the management is perfectly fine with that.
-Managerment is clearly looking for yes men.
-Sadly, dissenting opinions and people are squashed. Join this company ONLY if you pledge to always agree with your manager
    -Poor paymaster

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company is stagnating, management needs a shakeup.

Ad-hoc management, hard work is not recognised

    Senior Staff CAE (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsI have been working for Synopsys for 11 years.
Company has a very good executive management.
    work/life balance is pretty decent

ConsMiddle management (especially in the CAE side) is poor and stagnant.
Most managers are technically competent, but are old school and lack management skills
Managers (at least in our group) behave very differently with their management versus with their reports. Disagreement is NOT appreciated.
You have to literally suck up to your manager to be in good books.
There is not much room for career growth for the CAEs.
Lack of recognition for good work is prominent in all groups.

Advice to Senior ManagementEstablish a direct channel of communication with individual contributors to get a realistic feedback about the managers

A sad "Yes Boss" policy in IG CAE Business Unit

    Senior CAE II (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

    ProsEasy work environment
    Good talent in R&D organization
If you are a slacker, you dont need to worry in the IG CAE organization (slacking is ignored here)
    Industry leader

ConsIts not surprising that most reviews about the company from Mt View Synopsys are not positive:
The IG CAE Organization firmly believes in "Yes Boss" policy, if you disagree with the management, you are either doomed or on your own.
Bonus distribution and career growth is "certainly" not performance based, Bonus amount rather distributed equally among the employees
Growth potential in IG CAE organization is next to none, also mentioned in other reviews.
Very little emphasis on quality of work, quantity is appreciated

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease get some new blood in IG CAE middle/upper management.

Relaxed work environment, but expect no career growth

    Staff CAE (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsAll in all a stable company, but does not have much growth potential due to the nature of the industry
Provides a good work/life balance, mostly an un-stressed work environment
    Talented engineering staff
A good place to work if you want a laidback work environment

    ConsCAEs are underpaid
No incentives/awards/recognitions for good work. rather the awards are randomly distributed in the organization.
Like mentioned in other reviews, career growth and promotion opportunities almost do not exist. Promotions in the synthesis CAE organization are politically driven.
Big chunks of bonuses are awarded to the managers, most individual contributors are granted peanuts. Again, bonuses are NOT performance driven. The money pool is equally distributed among the employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide recognition and incentives for good performers (message to the IG CAE management), else the company will start losing them.

    Uninspiring opportunities and business philosophy

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsSafe. A good place to wait for retirement. Core business is growing at 3% and very predictable with the 3 year lease model

ConsGrowth is predominately by acquisition, which leaves little opportunity for career growth. Most of the people I worked with were B and C players: the A players had moved on to more exciting opportunities. Most upper management had been in the same position for more than a decade. There were a lot of silos in the back-office support..

Advice to Senior ManagementTry organic growth, and improving internal efficiencies.

    Good and Bad

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsAart, he was very good as a motivator and his high work ethics and morals during my employment.

ConsVery hard to get promoted, becoming a govt agency.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to common employee, get their feedback.

Walk your talk of integrity to the people who work for you

    Technical Publications Manager (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsThe benefits were fine and parallel to other major companies in the area. Depending on the group you are in, there are some good people to work with.

Cons- They supported student math and science tutoring and grant programs (I know because I volunteered in both) in a location where they won't be hiring these people as engineers, preferring to hire in "lower cost geographies." This came as an email from the CEO.
    - Huge politics and scapegoating.
    - Aquiring companies and laying off people, then expecting the rest to improve the quality and quantity of output to an unreasonable degree, while saying they support work/life balance.
    - Laying off just enough people so they don't have to report the layoff externally.
    - Tying unrealistic job performance expectations to salary cuts so they can get rid of people or reduce their salary without it being reported externally.
    - Laying off 200 people while the BU VP was making $3 million/year.

Advice to Senior Management- If you don't have budget for more people, make your project management more realistic.
    - Keep local jobs local.
    - If your VPs were making $1 million a year rather than $3 million, that would be twenty jobs you could save. Your product quality and innovation would improve because you'd have enough people who are able to do their best.
    - Follow President Obama's example for those companies receiving federal aid and scale back executive salaries before you scale back the salaries or jobs of people who are just making it.
    - Walk your talk of integrity to the people who work for you.

Cash strapped company with no growth potential

Senior Staff R&D Engineer (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGreat individuals, great minds especially among the old timers.
A great place to learn about cutting edge chip technology.

ConsCash strapped company, cost cutting mentality especially the past 5 years
No growth industry translates into no growth company, with two concequences:
1/ no or very few career opportunities, no or very few salary raises and stock
2/ the company is not growing, if you want to move your career ahead you have to be willing to go after your peers (no room for promotion unless somebody leaves). Unfortunately this creates a lot of unproductive tension inside the company - I've seen managers sabotaging projects to push their adversary out. If you strive in such an environment, you'll get your promotion ! If not .... you'll be miserable.
On the technical side, don't expect to learn and use cutting edge software development technologies. You'll be working on a legacy code (>20yrs) with old and heavy processes and a software development culture that is innovation adverse.

Advice to Senior ManagementSynopsys needs to re-invent itself, re-invent it software, its culture and learn to take risks again ... no risks ... no rewards
