Watch your back - the axe could fall at any moment.

Senior Design Engineer (Former Employee) Hillsboro, OR

ProsGood products to work on, relaxed company culture.

ConsInstead of developing new technologies internally, the company's strategy is to acquire other companies. When a new company is acquired, management has an instant headcount problem. They solve this "problem" by laying off other employees.

It's a double win for the CEOs - they're making themselves look cutting-edge by acquiring hot new companies, and simultaneously satisfying Wall Street by making it look like they're cutting expenses by reducing headcount.

Not so good for the regular employees, though; they're left wondering if they're going to be part of the next group of employees getting the axe.

Looking for a nice secure place to work? Look elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow some respect for your employees. Try fostering a culture where new technologies and processes are developed internally, instead of just leeching them from acquired companies. Your employees would probably be more productive if they weren't constantly looking over their shoulder for the next layoff.

It's a good place to glide

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDecent people who are polite and for the most part friendly. There is enough to keep busy. Not always micromanaged. Work/Life balance is good. Some technical challenges. Community volunteer work.

ConsNot a place to advance a career. Growth opportunities; limited. Challenging work; limited. Cross-training; limited. Salary increases; limited. Information seems to be guarded so you are on your own especially if you are part of an acquisition. CFO doesn't seem to value IT. Change is not accepted easily. There seems to be a family connection all over the place. The best work is for the favored not necessarily the best.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the CIO in charge of IT instead of the CFO.

    stable but not exciting

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsStable working environment. Bonus is guaranteed. Company is successful in its field. better than average salary.

ConsNot much room to grow. Upper management is stagnant. You have to work with twenty year old code. After some time, you do not learn new stuff.

Employees pay a high price for the success of Synopsys - work/life balance is not even an option!

Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsGood initial salary, bonus, benefits, vacation
    Evolving technology
    Well respected company
Supportive colleagues to commiserate with to help each other to get through the day.

ConsSalary freezes, bonuses paid according to cronyism; 24/7 workload expected
Middle managers who are out for themselves only!
One on ones are a joke, as managers don't want to hear your questions or feedback, they just want to load on more assignments.
Employees never hear praise or appreciation - only hear about when something is wrong.
There are a lot of two faced people there - especially in middle management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with respect and appreciate all that they do to make you successful!

    Decent but infuriating.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Durham, NC

    ProsMany good people.
    Good pay.
    Good HR.

ConsSome very bad yet outspoken people.
Lots of politics and empire building.
Lack of innovation. Strong desire to uphold the status quo.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote development and new ideas. Address continual poor performers.

    The experience is ok.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsThe best reason to work for Synopsys is the quality if talent you work with everyday. There are bright people all around and its great to work with them everyday.

ConsCareer growth is limited since the company is not growing. Especially if you are part of the some of the more established business units.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should provide appropriate career growth for people. The company is doing well with customers, some of the benefits should show to the employees.

Synopsys - is it the best

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsStable company with lot of cash reserves.
    Num 1 in the industry.

ConsNum 1 company does not pay num 1.
Management brings in their buddies as Peers instead of promoting employees.
Management takes credit for all success and does not share to the teams and employees.
Bureaucracy across the board with error resolution being high.
Stock offering is bad. It does not move up. Funny thing, they compare with apple when the market falls but with nothing when market moves up.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees should not be treated as commodities.
Credit and Recognition should be given.
Change the Crying baby gets more chocolates, way of treating.

Not a place to grow otherwise a great place to be.

Senior R&D Engineer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

    Pros- Best in EDA
    - Excellent senior management. They know where they are going.

Cons- Extremely slow growth. Average promotion after 4 years regardless of quality and dedication to work.
    - Due to this mid-level-to-first level management devotes time to promote themselves alone.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost employees look up to CEO Aart De Geus, a man of great vision and integrity, an exceptional leader. Excellent top level management specially top 5-6 people. Mid-to-first level managers must care, spend time with and listen to leaf level people.

    Synopsys is Steady but Uninspiring

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsSolid financial performance in a negative environment
OK work hours for a high tech firm
    Market leader
    Some nice people

ConsCareer paths do not appear to exist at Synopsys, there's little career progression, and the opportunities for professional growth seem highly limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the economy picks up, Synopsys managers will need to look for ways to retain good people. Right now, there aren't enough carrots--rewards such as raises, educational opportunities, career paths--which can create a very discouraging work environment. It shouldn't be necessary for people to get job offers elsewhere to negotiate being more valued by their company.
