I have been working at Synopsys full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Stable, pays well. Generally pleasant environment. Good place to hide out in a downturn. Reasonable location for commuting.

    Cons

Aging and non-mobile management structure in Silicon Valley, younger employees and expansion seems to be mostly in Asia. Limited scope for upward mobility. Business units conflict rather than complement. No vision for EDA (continually fighting last battle). Multiple overlaps in BU functionality. Insufficient technical expertise in management leads to "analysis paralysis". No internal leadership, only respond to customers - reactive not proactive.
Sorely missing real software architects and EDA methodology people - lots of missed opportunities.

I worked at Synopsys full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good things - decent pay, decent physical work environment (cubicles), relevant to electronics industry, good upper management, not too much pressure - good work/life balance

    Cons

Rent-seeking mentality, mediocre middle managers, not much room for career advancement, pay is only ok. The industry is overall not expanding and not very exciting. High expectations but limited support. Very rigid corporate environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Encourage more risk taking

Good Work Culture. You can work from home.

    Cons

Not much growth. Salaries and perks are not good.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Good office culture.

    Cons

Pay is less than market reference. Environment encourages deterministic thinking. Employees who work hard get more work but may not get more pay. Employees who worked in a relaxed way are left untouched.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please nourish and allow promising talent to grow. The management seems to be becoming top heavy.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Compensation is good and yearly bonus seems to be something that can be expected. Job security appears to be quite high with only occasional house cleaning.

    Cons

Don't count on any raises. If you are in the U.S., don't expect your team to grow locally. Almost all new hires are in India or China. Expect to be available for meetings outside of normal working hours. Expect cultural challenges. Opportunities arise based on who you know not what you know or how good you are. In some organizations, specific ethnicity is a plus,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of people in the U.S. The engineering culture in the U.S. really is different from the rest of the world. With the economy improving, expect people to seek other opportunities,

    Pros

Nice friendly people and some talented researchers. Top management has clear directions. Moderate benefits and time-off policies.

    Cons

Mid level management tends to have little leadership and insufficient perspectives. Outdated business tracking systems. Stable, maybe too stable, little fluidity to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication across layers of management to be stressed.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Relatively stable and good work-life balance

    Cons

    1) Promotion is a secret unless being promoted to management position
    2) Low upward mobility due to non-volatile management chain
    3) Annual salary increase slightly above inflation but below national average

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company has doubled in valuation and became industry leader in recent years. Reward your employees accordingly; Understood christmas shutdown was needed during tough economy situation 2-3 years ago; but continuing christmas shutdown when stock is all time high and arguing it's due to employees' request is not ethic.

I worked at Synopsys full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

#1 EDA provider with large portfolio to sell from.
    Great work-life balance.
Opportunities to change job/role within company. Synopsys will hire internally before hiring external candidates. Once you are in, you can stay there until retirement.
Opportunity to work with some of the smartest R&D architect in the industry.

    Cons

    Aging company and sales force.
    R&D driven company.
Personal politics and goals get on the way of business growth.
Slow to make decision - DNA is built consensus and not empower people to make their own decisions.
Easy to "fly under the radar" and do a minimum work (I understand this can be seen as a pros for some people!!).
