Former Employee - Project Lead I in Pune (India)

I worked at Syntel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Anybody can get a job here ...
    2. There is complete job security, the useless can stick around for a lifetime and build careers by just sucking up to your managers ..

    Cons

    1. Poor leadership .. no involvement with the developers . Every manager spends 90% of his time pleasing his boss. a Manager does not know the names of his developers
    2. Extremely poor support systems, Finance, HR, Admin, Transport, VISA are different countries with no connectivity
    3. Each of the above departments have their own systems - Imagine having to raise an onsite travel request ..
    4. The HR are the most callous and rude people, or wait is that the Finance department ? Every unit of this company competes to make the employees life living hell.
    5. You can escalate your problems to your management - but then you become the "black sheep" and anyway no one bothers about the real issue.
    6. The transport is managed by goons and its a genuine safety issue.
    7. The appraisal system is a joke, there is no data captured in the system and everything is perception based. This is good if your manager loves you though.
    8. The company is money minded and employees are NOT the most important Asset. Expense reports require 7 levels of approvals and the finance department acts as if they are paying money from their own pockets even for genuine expenses
    9. From a business standpoint, Clients see Syntel as a staffing company and there are very few large clients and value added work being done here
    10. This is a classic case of how a stick gets the work done
    11. They have a 5S value system which stands for Simple, Smart, Stretch, Synergy and Speed .. but once you get inside you realize it stands for Stupidity, Sycophancy, Slowness, Selfishness, Stingy ..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Any advice to the management falls on deaf years so its a moot point.

    1. They could do with a little bit of Humility, listening to the employees, reduce arrogance, improve internal systems and processes, make the support departments accountable to the employees, reduce red-tape ..
    2. Succession planning, 1-on-1 interviews, fair and transparent performance assessments.
    3. Encourage different ideas, allow the people to speak and appear to listen
One could write a book here ..

    I worked at Syntel

    Pros

Don't think of much. Only thing is lateral recruit salary at offshore is good.

    Cons

HR Policies and Management is in the bad shape. Managers think they are the bosses and they can drive the show like they are running their own business. I joined as PM and I reported to PL at offshore. What a pity? Now if they are transferring you to other location then manager will say I don't have budget do not claim too much expenses. Over all HR and Expense claim dept is pathetic. They take months to approve smaller expenses as well. After moving onsite again they took months to approve expenses. And if you are relocating at onshore it is a big curse. you have pay out of pocket expenses as well. For claiming all these you have to fight and literally beg to the finance dept or HR. And at onsite you have to be ready for any role available otherwise go back to offshore. PDAC will give you threats to call back. :-). bcoz of all this I quit Syntel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the HR policies and top level management if you want good growth. I heard one of the speech from CEO when he was in Gurgaon office. And I raised couple of questions. He was unable to answer and he told directly if someone is not liking you can quit and find opportunities outside. From top to middle management needs refinement.

I have been working at Syntel

    Pros

work life balance is good. Some of the managers are good at empowering employees

    Cons

Promotions are based on how well you know the manager, absolutely no growth opportunities, politics, people getting into PM position with fake work experience. No proper recognition system in place,it totally depends on the manager

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide opportunities for growth, don't make worthless people managers just because they have contacts. Job rotation is key to pickup new skills

    I worked at Syntel full-time

    Pros

    Not Applicable
Hard to fill minimum words here

    Cons

    - manager centric. Even if manager harasses and nothing happens even if you talk to HR
    - No good policies. HRs are just great. govt employee work far better than HR.
    - heights of poor Management.
    - Appraisals are big joke here.
    - full of politics, No fair/ equal opportunities in team esp under some good managers ( for eg. Arul kumar singarayar in state-street previously)
    - some awesome policies like if you got early release not by your request, you're forced to pay in reverse for it and at last you leave the amount to these great company to get rid off.( notice period is just 3 months re)
    - one more interesting policy is resource rotation, Suppose if you're a BI developer and unfortunately you're in bench/completed 24 months in project, you may be released and allocated to a job which fresher wouldn't like to do.
    - full of billing politics, cost saving centric. doesn't recognize your hard-work / experience. if you're experienced, you will just get replaced with freshers
    - No training opportunities.
    - Awards are just for namesake. just distributed among teams not decided on things you actually do
    - Due to less claiming, all worst projects rejected by other competitors would be bidded by syntel
    - No reverse feed back system in place atleast for namesake.
    - manager sits along with group of resource with HR meet, where HRs ask about the problems.
    - No communication with higher management
    - Dear support genre guys. just get know the shift allowance, its 100 per morning shift. 350 per night. this nice company will not provides cab facility even during night shifts when you work for clients like state-street. Fact is both are awesome. just imagine you did a night shift and wait for share auto/ bus in the morning
    - Any company that says itself an MNC wouldnt have these agreements with clients to not provide cabs.

    Cons

no proper commute has been provided to the lady employees

I worked at Syntel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to do a lot of work. So, learning is good.
They say there are onsite opportunities. But only to those who are lucky + have worked TOO much.

    Cons

Project bidding is lesser -> lesser funds -> fewer resources -> TOO much work -> Poor wok-life balance.
Funds are lesser -> Pay hike is tends to ZERO
No appreciation for work well done.
Rotation policy is not doing good for the employee. It's just a tactic to keep them from promotions and pay hike etc for deserving employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be human. It takes a lot of efforts to deliver a task on time with superior quality. Appreciate the efforts in terms of promotions, pay hikes etc.
Do not rely only on freshers. The break even point for them comes at least after 1 year. In the mean time, senior fellow has to complete his own work and educate them as well, which again takes efforts.
Quote higher bids for the projects so that sufficient and good resources can be assigned to deliver.
Last, try to retain people. People make company. Not the other way round.

    Pros

The likelihood of finding a project, if you are OK to work for ANY project, is very high.

    Cons

    1. Highly corrupt leadership; most decisions pertaining to Syntel USA and made in India.
    2. Getting a promotion is hard unless you brown-nose your bosses.
They have a weird policy of giving 1/2 salary for a full-time employee if the spouse is already employed with them.
