As an admin, the company has lovely culture where even buying directors are happy to chat to entry level employees.

I worked at T.K. Maxx full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Buyer's admins can attend vendor meetings with buyers and voice own opinions, great access to excel training, competitive pay, employees ready to help each other, creativity in encouraged through responsibility for trend research and mood boards, exposure to weekly reports and training into how to read them, as a buyer's admin you get a great understanding of product and best and worst sellers throughout a huge number of brands. The company is also as fair as it can be, if you have to stay late at work, the supervisors ensure you get your time back.

    Cons

If you are interested in buying there is not a great route up from buyers admin level, you are required to join the graduate scheme at allocator level and work your way up to assistant merchandiser before you can move across into buying as an assistant buyer. However, if you want a long term career at TK Maxx an understanding of merchandising would be extremely useful for off-price and the graduate scheme provides excellent training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It may be advisable to introduce a second route into buying where buyer's admins can be promoted to senior buyer's admin, allowing them to work closely with assistant buyers/buyers/merchandisers and gain training to advance to assistant buyer. As promotions would be reliant on the admins progress, this would allow the business to decide whether buying is the right path for the individual. This would prevent valued employees leaving for other opportunities or being forced to enter the route of admin supervisor (the only alternative opportunity for progression).

I have been working at T.K. Maxx part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Quite a fun, relaxed, fast-paced atmosphere where there is always a variety of things to do. The management are really nice and understanding and the company is quite flexible with your hours.

    Cons

If you're working part-time you may struggle to get enough hours. The company now only employs people on 8 and 12 hour contracts.

I worked at T.K. Maxx as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

I liked meeting new people whilst serving, I liked that I learnt new things from management so when i did things wrong they would explain to me what would be better to do next time. I loved a lot of the things that they had in the store so it was always a perk of being an employee to buy things and get a discount. I got a long with a lot of the other employees and it was nice becoming friends with them and talking to them outside of work.

    Cons

I didn't like that I got put on emergency tax, as I was only 17 at the time and it was my first job therefore at the time I wasn't sure what to do once I got put on the wrong tax code. Also sometime I found it difficult to talk to my manager about it, as he didn't see it as a priority and instead of helping me and doing something about it he would just leave it and sometimes speak down to me.

    Pros

The company will push you to be greater if they see potential so if you're looking for progression and you have what it takes there are great possibilities to move up to management.

    Cons

Trying to get customers to understand the nature of the business. Extremely fast paced at times, especially Christmas. You need a good pair of shoes!

I worked at T.K. Maxx part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My boss was always really friendly and helpful, the team were also lovely! Great discounts especially for friend and family events. Customers were also fun to talk to while serving them. I felt valued and the hours are flexible which I really needed!

    Cons

Found being stuck on one laborious job for too long made me dislike that days works, e.g. too much fitting room or maintenance. Sometimes the team leaders didn't pull their weight. Being given multiple jobs at once, e.g. being on fitting rooms, while flowing stock and trying to put the full clothes rail out, meant one of the tags got left in the changing rooms and I got into trouble.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not overload people with work and make sure managers/team leaders pull their weight. Multiple times a team leader told me to pick something up instead of just doing it herself.

    Pros

Fairly balanced work-life, wide variety of duties, constant opportunities for development and amazing colleagues.

    Cons

Work can sometimes be a little to much but the colleagues compensate and also the management team can be very understanding if you let them know what is going on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the great work.

I have been working at T.K. Maxx part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There is never a boring day in T.K. Maxx and no two days are ever the same! I have met some great people through working in T.K. Maxx. Reward gift cards for EPC's are great, means I can get something I have had my eye on!

    Cons

T.K. Maxx can be a challenging place to work in, it is not like any other type of clothing/department store. It takes a lot of hard work and team work to be able to work for this company. It is sometimes a challenge at the end of the night to recover the store (some nights are worse than others!) in the allocated amount of time. Sometimes the customers can be quite challenging. Having only 10% reduction on damaged goods can be a problem explaining to customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am quite happy with the managememnt in the store that I currently work in. Although sometimes I feel that management could help out more on the floor after the store has closed to help with recovery.
