Conservative, healthy company with the need to promote leaders not project mgrs

Associate, Individual Contributor (Current Employee)

I have been working at T. Rowe Price full-time for more than a year

ProsExecutives and leadership crave innovative thinkers and are focused on the right directives ....serving clients while remaining operationally nimble and efficient.

ConsOutside of call centers, mid level people-managers are long timers, promoted for successful project delivery. Unfortunately, they do not have the experience to lead organizational change, translating objectives into actionable goals for their teams. As a result, new ideas are discouraged and teams do not adapt. For associates that have held management roles outside of the company, it is disheartening and may be "years" before your voice is heard or you are promoted in order to make a difference.

Advice to Senior ManagementHR and high level executives: Look deep within your organizations and consider leaders based on current and past internal & external TRP experience rather than relationships and successful project delivery. Hold mid PLs and VPs accountable for aligning team charter with real tactical measures of success. Soft measures of being T Rowe Nice and "this is how we have always done it" is a corporate culture not a goal. Foster inclusion of new ideas at all levels, that align to the "goals", and through this you will unleash passionate innovative ideas that deliver results.

Stability and Great Benefits

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at T. Rowe Price full-time

ProsStability, Good Benefits, AWA, Great Bonuses

ConsMild yearly increases, difficult to advance once you get to a certain point.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep talent within the firm by hiring internally. This can be accomplished by mentoring programs to help employees begin preparing for the next steps. Much of Managements focus is on Delivery...somewhere along the way people management fell to the bottom of the priority list.

Looks great on a resume if you can stand the political environment.

Desktop Support (Former Employee)
Baltimore, MD

I worked at T. Rowe Price as an intern for more than a year

ProsLooks great on a resume. Benefits are amazing- matching 401k, adoption pays up to 80% of fees and tuition reimbursement. Great tool for networking.

ConsVery political environment, hard to move up the ranks unless you network and even then it can be cumbersome. The hiring/on-boarding process can take weeks or months for a position approval.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement: Promote candidates that actually deserve the job and are qualified.
More often than not it was about who you knew in the company rather than experience or job performance. Contracting for this company can be risky depending on the manager.

Good place to start a career and learn the business. Too much focus on race

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Baltimore, MD

I have been working at T. Rowe Price full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI started here out of college and have worked both in Owings Mills and in Baltimore. It is a great place to work, especially if you are starting out. Even though it is a big company it really feels like a family and the culture is great.

ConsThere is a lot of focus on race and ethnicity at this company and it has gotten worse over the last few years. There are efforts to boost the number of minorities with management even admitting that they are willing to go into bidding wars with their competitors for minority job applicants. While I'm sure it is well intentioned, If you are a minority in this company you feel like you are just there because of your skin color. Unfortunately other employees begin to become suspicious that you only got the job because of your skin and otherwise aren't capable. This focus on race is racist and needs to stop. Aside from this it is a good company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the focus on race and ethnicity. We should be hiring people based on how well they will do the job, not to fill a quota. At the end of the day what matters is whether or not the person has good ideas. As MLK famously said, "Judge a man by his character and not by the color of his skin."
