    I worked at TD Ameritrade

I worked at TD Ameritrade as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I was only a temporary intern but I was given mentorship and decent amount of responsibility considering my experience. My manager was very flexible with hours I put so if I was late, all I had to do was make up the time afterwords.
Since I was a temp though I don't have too much insight on training full time employees get along with their time off policies

    Cons

A temp intern won't face too much cons here.
Some days work was a bit slow so it got boring.
Pay for intern was kind of on the low side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CTO and the rest of the leadership in the Tech section were very good leaders. Please continue on what you are doing.

  5. This was an excellent first internship experience that taught me about how a company of 60,000 employees worked.

I worked at TD Ameritrade as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Positive environment, very nice co-workers. I learned a lot about how a large business worked but not as much about the industry I want to go into.

    Cons

As an intern (probably not super qualified for the job coming in) I was intimidated by experienced people who spoke in very technical finance lingo. I wished this job was more of an educational experience rather than answering the phones. I think their goal in having interns answer the phones was pretty much to alleviate call volume coming in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None - all experiences with them were positive

  6. One of the best I've worked for

    I worked at TD Ameritrade

    Pros

Great people, great environment, growing technology, great benefits . Not enough good things to say.

    Cons

Growth is lacking for current employees. Get hired in at the highest you can, because you'll get stuck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow successors from within the company instead of depending always on outside resources. It will go a long way with moral and retention of employees. Management needs to follow through with what they "say" they're going to do. Not just talk about it and let you down.

  7. Great Firm

    Pros

Great people, great teamwork, and a great way to stay connected to the financial markets

    Cons

can't think of any worth talking about here

  8. Overall, good place to work in IT

I worked at TD Ameritrade full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

NJ office is a good location
    Growing company
Always at the cutting edge of new technology (for an enterprise company)
Hours are pretty reasonable (9-6) most of the time. If you are gunning for promotions, you usually have to at least act like you are working more hours. Working smarter doesn't seem to matter from what I can tell.
There is usually a 5-15% bonus every year
    Business casual
Work from home is ok once every 2-3 weeks usually

    Cons

The work life / environment tends to fluctuate over time. At times it is great, there is focus on good growth and useful technologies and goals.
Other times management is playing political games and productivity suffers.
Sometimes they just say "cut 1-5%" and someone in almost every team is cut.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They are a big company now so they suffer from the usual temptation of disfunction.

I have been working at TD Ameritrade full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is average to above for going market rate
    Upward mobility is possible
    Great locations and benefits
    Most people are friendly

    Cons

Talk about open to change, but not really implemented
Working in Silo. Team collaboration not done effectively
    No work/life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train managers to manage "down" just as well as they manage "up".
Really institute a reward/revise program around encouraging work/life balance for middle management.
