Former Employee - Service Technician in Vancouver, BC (Canada)

I worked at TELUS full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very challenging technical job, great training programs in the past. Clean, safe work environment. Good pension plan, acceptable salary.

    Cons

Extreme disrespect and arrogance from executive leadership for frontline workers, a definite (lack of) class system. Gradually eroding job security and benefits, with good Canadian jobs being discontinued in favour of outsourcing and offshoring jobs. Profits are continually up, executive compensation is up, numbers of executive jobs up (3 levels of vice president now), performance pressure up, number of actual workers down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using the latest business lexicon (seamless, forward-going, low-hanging fruit, operational silos, process infrastructure initiative deep-dive actionable...), and start supporting your front-line people. Be more flexible with time off. Hire some clerks to take the administrative duty load away from your technical workers. Recognise excellence with meaningful compensation, not just words. Let workers manage their time, and get rid of so-called "productivity" software.

    Pros

    Almost limitless budgets
Aren't afraid to try new things
Job stability - you'll never be fired
    Ability to work from home

    Cons

Too many micro-managers & managers in general
Projects approved by committees - panders to highest paid person's opinion
Highly political work environment with an us vs them attitude between teams
Senior managers promoted beyond their competency aka: The Peter Principle
    Wages rarely if ever increase

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apparently you already know it all - so I have nothing to add

I have been working at TELUS full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working from home helps us balance work and life activities; one ends up being more productive in both worlds. Very tolerant environment to visible minorities and others.

    Cons

Pay has become substandard. Top performers in our team haven't had a raise in years, not even for increased cost of living / inflation. No wonder, when we have 1/3 of he company in the third world countries. Promotions are based on who you know, not what you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check your management team; some of them were not cut for managers, nor have they sufficient skills and education for it.

    too much red tape/bureaucracy
touts itself as one of the best employers yet pays below industry standards

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

poor financial incentives for high performers - makes it difficult to retain top tallent

if the company were truly interested in retaining top talent non-existent financial incentives need to be addressed
