A lot of wasted work, poorest management top to bottom I have ever seen

Senior Artist (Former Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsNice benefits, challenging work, great games to work on

ConsSome of the worst managers I have ever seen were at THQ. Nothing but politics got anyone ahead. No vision. There was no clue as to how to develop creative IP, or even understand why existing IP was successful. Marketing called the shots = recipe for disaster. Some managers were bullies, creating the idea that it was ok for other staff to bully...other managers were awol, still others were focused on protecting domains... real leaders were chased away.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's too late. You ruined some great possibilities and franchises. You wasted decades worth of work by failing to competently green-light projects and support them all the way through release before second-guessing and eating the cost of half-developed projects.

    Company was Poorly managed company

Project Manager (Current Employee) Agoura Hills, CA

ProsTHQ was close to my residence, making commuting in the soCal area bearable.

ConsThe company downsized teams regularly and Sr. Management was solely interested in making a cheap profit, often at the expense of clients and internal quality.

    Audit Senior

Audit Senior (Current Employee) Agoura Hills, CA

ProsNone, it was a very disorganized, dissatisfying company to work for. It was operating based on the clique and posse basis and not competence.

Cons- High incompetence at C-Suite level, people who can just talk the talk but inexperienced to walk it
    - Operate on hope not strategy
    - Sweep any red audit flags

Advice to Senior Management- Well, none, they ran the company to the ground and i was not surprised, just shocked it took so long, there was no way they were going to make it. They lacked ethics

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

No idea what is going on...

    (Former Employee) Agoura Hills, CA

ProsI got a lot of free games at the end of the year... and then they announced bankruptcy and a bunch of people I saw on a daily basis were gone in an instant...

ConsFelt like I was walking on egg shells since day one at this place.
Nobody knows what is going on, not even upper management. Speaking of upper management, there seems to be many of them while nothing is getting done.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou don't need so many directors and VPs that do nothing but sap away your finances. Seriously, how many execs do you need..??

    Past its sell by date

Vice President (Current Employee) Agoura Hills, CA

ProsNice location. The admins are fantastic.

ConsExecutive leadership and board could not possibly be more asleep at the wheel. Taking a share price from $33 to .45 is amazing. What is most impressive as to how much they go from one head of studios to another despite the lack of portfolio or games studio experience. Snake oil salesman and snake oil buyers, the board and exec teams deserve each other.

Advice to Senior ManagementResign before you run out of studios to crash.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Phoenix, AZ

Prosgood tuition reimbursal, made some good games in the past:

Conspoor management, dumb ideas, and no clue of what it takes to make a quality product.

Advice to Senior Managementfire yourselves and and hire people that know WTF they are doing!

New Employee and Ready to Leave

Manager Level (Current Employee) Agoura Hills, CA

    Pros- great boss
    - nice medical benefits
    - nice to have christmas closure

    Cons- R&D old and tired
    - IT non-existent and old school
    - leadership needs to lead

Advice to Senior ManagementI recently joined THQ and unfortunate to admit a mistake. People are nice, but company is stale and negative. For a software development company very antiquated management and systems. IT non-existent, servers are from 1990's with analog phones. NEW R&D BLOOD - THQ needs a hit. What about kid games like Mario Bros? Something beyond wrestling. Good luck!

THQ doesn't provide much opportunity to those who work hard and prove themselves.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Champaign, IL

ProsMy company has a great working environment with lots of fantastic colleagues, decent benefits, rewarding in and of itself work, with some perks.

ConsMy company doesn't seem to believe in hiring from within, and the few that have been elevated were promptly laid off despite good reviews and performance.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is lots of talent within the company, but they are overworked with not very much support. We make titles for a third of what the competition does and it shows.

Not the Relic ( THQ ) of Home World and Company of Heroes

Senior Production Artist (Former Employee) Vancouver, BC (Canada)

Pros-Once was the top of the industry
    -Amazing talent
-Early games were amongst the highest rated games
-Great city to live and work
    -Work life balance is fair

Cons- Went from producing games with meta critic scores in the 90's ( Company of Heroes and HomeWorld )
to producing games with scores in the low 70's ( SpaceMarine and The Outfit )
    - High turn over of upper management and senior staff.
    - Ineffective HR department ( went through three HR directors in two years)
    - A high turn over of top talent has left the studio with very inexperienced people being placed into senior rolls
    - Disorganized, poor department communication, projects compete with each other rather than use the technology and resources developed by one project, its re invented by the next team.
    - The quality of games has been on the decline for 5 years
    - Far behind in technology and perusing obsolete business models
    - The constant turn over of senior staff have has cause a work place with politics, and inexperienced individuals have moved into those senior rolls, many on these new seniors lack the experience to lead or make sound choices both creatively or from a business perspective.
    - Office bullying by is a common complaint

Advice to Senior Management-Management needs to play a more active roll in the initial development of a project.
-Bringing in friends or friends of friends rather than truly qualified people will only hasten a decaying business place.
-Reward your senior staff not make them leave
-Read the book "who moved my cheese" business need to adapt to the changes in economics

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
