The job itself is easy, but the people you work make its harder than it has to be

    Transportation Security Officer (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

Prosyou get all of the benefits weather you are working part of full time. You can use TSA as stepping stone for other federal agencies.

ConsThere is no such thing as personal growth or recognition for work excellence. If you are a person who love to work the same thing day to day. Then this is the job for you.

Love the mission, hate the work environment.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere is a an opportunity to truly make a difference in the ability of the flying public to travel safely. The agency has all of the "programs" that make working for the government a good thing.

ConsEmployees are nothing, sometimes not even a number. Staffing is low which punishes the good worker who shows up everyday ready to work. You end up doing your job and someone elses who decides to call out.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit talking leadership and actually apply it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Federal Stepping Stone

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFederal Job, Federal Benefits, Lots of opportunities to do other details, easily build people skills as well as trained in social engineering

ConsCoworkers have less than two years experience, anyone that has some comprehension of what the job requires and can do the job well either finds a better job in the BOP or CBP mostly BOP, or is run out of town. Everyone is at each others throats about pointless details of the job, and management bends over backwards to pretty much anybody that is not a TSO. Ow yeah and you will lose whatever life you had before joining the shifts are terrible you work an eight hour shift five days a week the airport is open from 3 to 11 best shifts go to the most senior. I was there five years never had the option of sat sun best i got was fri sat and that was for the year before I resigned. Good luck to whoever applies.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a backbone and remember that it's a pyramid all of the support is at the bottom, the pharaoh isn't buried on the top of the pyramid it's buried underneath the damn thing.

Everything is always good in the beginning. . .

    TSA OFFICER (Current Employee)

ProsRetirement benefits and Health, Dental, Vision insurance plans and choice of selection of plans. Annual Leave accrues

ConsFortunately at the airport I work at, the passengers are FANTASTIC. Management is the bigger issue from the top down. Opportunities for advancement are almost non-existent. Good luck if you wish to transfer to another government agency as TSA is the red-headed step child of all government agencies. Poor communication between management and subordinates. Wasteful government spending on redundant training. Poor training when new policies are rolled out. The evaluation system is non-existent and the Union is really nothing more than an entity which has little to no say against TSA policies.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be nice to see management that actually has a heart and cares for the people they manage. Instead of giving lip service to wanting to increase morale, actually DO something to SHOW you care...not just talk about it. How about promoting from within instead of transferring people in from other places for jobs that many ARE qualified for at the local level. Would be nice to see people promoted based on merit and not favoritism.

Great benefits, but in the end you have to touch people against their will

    Transportation Security Officer (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

    ProsReasonable health insurance
12 days each of sick and vacation each year
    TSP (retirement plan)
    Stable schedule

ConsYou can be written up or fired for using your sick days. In some areas, it is impossible to get the time off you want.
Also, you will work weekends until you get enough seniority, which can be a decade.
I have had to pat down (physically search by touching all over) babies, young children, people in pain from my touch, elderly people, people that can't understand what is happening to them.
The good people, the one ones with options leave. The leftovers are the ones who get promoted. So you have a guy that barely graduated high school telling you why, with all seriousness, grandma can't take her bottle of water with her.
I was told that I wasn't promoted because I wasn't the "right" race.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo one listens.

    Decent pay, poor management

    Behavior Detection Officer (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsGood pay for the work and good benefits.

ConsManagement is terrible. Promotion process is a joke. No leadership. Public can be difficult to work with.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire yourselves and clean house. Actually plan ahead instead of always reacting.

    Good Benefits Poor Management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat Medical Benefits, and the pay is better than minimum wage. This job is a good stepping stone for federal service.

ConsPoor management. Most management officials were grandfathered into their positions and have no prior management skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementWeed out the ineffective people and start promoting people who have common sense above all else.

    Hard to get ahead.

    Transportation Security Screener (Current Employee)
    Jacksonville, FL

ProsGood pay, Friendly co-workers, steady employment, and great benefits

ConsHard to get promotions. Over worked. Under payed for the expertise and extensive equipment knowledge needed.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce your bonuses, overhead, and hire more employees for the work load. Renegotiate the agreement with congress to lift constraints on pay, paid time off, and bonuses for the work force.
