GOOD START FOR A FEDERAL CAREER

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsBenefits are good even for the part time employees. Advancement for those who are well connected with management and maintain a high score on TOPS a 4 or higher.

Consmanagement micro manage in areas where it is not necessary, employees left alone will do just fine. management have a reputation of firing employees finding out later having to bring them back to their old jobs.

There are worse jobs, at least that is what I keep telling myself...

Transportation Security Officer (Current Employee) Omaha, NE

ProsFull benefits even for part time employees, shift differentials are decent, minimum starting wage is just about 14 dollars per hour, no cost to employee for uniforms, there is a union, there tends to be a lot of OT offered, if you are required to travel for work it's completely paid for and you get a stipend for food, lots of opportunities for advancement, very easy to transfer from one airport to another, and you can tell people you work for the Department of Homeland Security!

ConsFirst and foremost you are dealing with the public and they think you are personally out to get them. Second staffing shortages are a daily occurrence and if they don't have volunteers to work OT you maybe be forced into mandatory OT. If a training class or meeting falls on your day off you will be forced into mandatory OT. Fourth you work every holiday unless you are lucky enough that it fell on your day off. Fifth do not expect to get weekends off! Starting out you have the middle of the week off. Sixth the majority of the shift hours suck; 4 am to 1230 pm, 1030 am to 7 pm(no chance starting out you will get this shift), 12 pm to 830pm, 3 pm to 12am. There are also split shifts 5 to 10 am (break for 2 hours) then 12 to 3 pm. Finally raises are very small if they happen at all, and if Congress can't decide on a budget you do not get paid but you still have to work or you will lose your job.

Advice to Senior ManagementFight harder for your workers raises. Get staffing numbers increased. Give credit where credit is due.

Umm its okay but this is definitely not a long term job.

    Tso (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsIssuance is great. The pay is okay for whats being done. Some of the co-workers are really nice to work with.

ConsThe pay could be higher. You're always on pins and needles everyday. Promotions are not fair. A lot of favoritism. The seniority factor. Management is horrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou all really need to work on the scheduling managers and getting more staffing. When staffing is low and you assign over time its normally assigned when nothing is going on. Getting Vacation time is nearly impossible if you haven't been there long.

    Hit or Miss Job Environment

    Transportation Security Officer (Former Employee)

ProsThe main pro is job security. Even with cuts throughout the Federal government, if you earn even a bit of seniority it's very hard to lose your job. In addition, you can end up working with some pretty cool people and building camaraderie in your assigned area.

ConsYou never know what you're going to get for job environment. Each airport is different in how they run things, and even each assigned station may change. Sometimes you have a regular assignment with a good supervisor (like my first airport), other times you rotate your assignment every day and have micromanaging, abusive supervisors (like my second). It's a turkey shoot and just hope you get something cool... otherwise, you may be stuck doing heavy labor for anal-retentive jerks.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure your supervisors and upper management stick to the SOP and don't try and throw their own rules into the mix. Nothing worse than being trained one way only to be berated for it when you transfer to another airport.

    -Continuous pay increases

    Cons-Constantly dealing with the public
-TSA gets a bad rap so be prepared to have people dislike you just for working for TSA

Advice to Senior ManagementProvided continuous training. Alot of people that are promoted have no idea how to be a supervisor.

Its a great place to work if you're coming out of high school and want to start working before starting college.

TSO (Transportation Security Officer) DFW Airport (Former Employee) Flushing, NY

ProsYou're able to work in a security branch without under going a security course.

ConsThe job can seem stagnant and lack stimulation for highly ambitious and autonomous individuals.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe sure to evaluate the happiness of your employees to ensure the quality of services isn't compromised.

The left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing on most days.

Screening Officer (Former Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsThe Pay is great! But not as good as Customs.
the money will keep you there. Great place to work if you are young and have no children.

ConsManagers and Supervisors need to quit acting like they are gods.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo the job of screening officer for 6 months, then maybe you will be what we go through. Also, the money will keep you there.
