    I worked at Talbots

    Pros

the store management was nice and flexible. The clients were usually people that have been loyal to talbots for a long time. The quality of the clothes was mostly good for an outlet.

    Cons

Low pay and barely any increase in salary.
Corporate staff seemed like they didn't care.

    I worked at Talbots

    Pros

Easy job responsibilities, customers were not difficult, the brand was updating itself to a more modern look-- which the associates had to help explain to the older customers.

    Cons

No structure for sales plan (they completed "adapted" other retailer's style of tracking sales, productivity, etc).
I had made a lot of compromises for this company with little return -not a healthy work/life balance

    Pros

    Cons

I worked at Talbots full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Large corporation culture and benefits. The culture was continuing to evolve to a more progressive and up to date atmosphere in the final years of my employment. Lots of great, hard working peers.

    Cons

It is well known that the company has been going through a dramatic transition from a public thriving company to a lean and more efficient enterprise. The staffing has been cut too thin for the amount of work my group was tasked to accomplished and so it was hard to do a good job. A lot of outsourcing and "downsizing" was done in my final years there. This resulted in understandable culture of fear and heightened finger pointing as things were predictably dropped due to over taxing the team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adjust staffing levels up to allow for the high quality product that Talbots is known for.

I worked at Talbots part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

discount, nice staff, quality product, wonderful customers

    Cons

Assistant manager's behavior is rude and condescending. Manager's advice "just talk her down give her a bag to breathe into".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assistant manager's behavior is outrageous. She is confusing, rude, demeaning and condescending. She has no managerial skills. The manager is no help. She said to "just talk her down and give her a paper bag to breathe into". Talbots part time staff at this store consists of several associates who retired from professional positions, i.e. teachers, managers, paralegal, etc. who are used to better management.

I worked at Talbots full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Village locations have better hours, including holiday hours, than mall. Don't usually get angry or hard to deal with cusomters. Good discount, however the clothes are still very expensive.

    Cons

No merrit raises for any one in company in over 6 years. Little to no opportunity for growth and promotions- constant outside hires. Expects a lot for little compensation. Absolutely no work life balance possible, even in village stores. Quality of product is nothing like it used to be, however, still has very high price points. Upper management and corporate constantly changing. Would not reccomend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge high performing associates. Listen to your employees. Starting giving raises again.

I have been working at Talbots full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great discount, clothing is high quality.

    Cons

Continued field leadership changes. New positions in the field put in place that are not productive or effective. The culture can be very "false positive" The culture is one of "go along to get along". Talbots will have a successful year this year do to improved product, very weak business last year due to weather and bottom line controls of payroll & spending, if the culture was positive and stable it could be an even more successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put ego aside and your finger on the pulse of the field and listen objectively.

    Pros

Good customers! Beautiful clothing. Great benefits for full time employees.

    Cons

Hours have been cut so less time to engage our customers. Top store management aren't on sales floor to help with service and sales so we are exhausted. company has been devaluing our new product lately by discounting it by 25% when it comes in. Hard to sell full price when it comes in on sale. Very poor planning from merchandising team on floor sets. You never have even 50% of product to execute it and usually within a few days, they will change some sale that requires you redo what you have just done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Coordinate product delivery better and hire some people in merchandising who have actually worked in a store. Give us the opportunity to sell the new product for at least a werk at full price. Get the top store management off the phone and internet to engage with our clients so we can all be successful in what could be a great store.
