I have been working at Talbots

    Pros

Love my customers, 90% are great. Employee discount is exceptional.
I have a wonderful team that I built.
We should be a much better company to work for we were before.

    Cons

Pay needs to be better or have incentive program that is money in their check not style $'s.
I have not had a raise in 4 years despite beating comp #'s.
Expectations for credit card opening way too high. I'm made to feel like if associates don't make these goals for credit cards despite making sales goals I am expected to threaten them or " have a serious talk" with them.
Talbots needs to understand out customers are 40's to 50's & up and so are our employees.
Also way too many floor sets, we have limited payroll to spent on non - productive hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give merit raises- this will build morale
Visual needs to think about payroll constraints and physical demands
Stop making associates feel threatened. No one wants to work like that
If you want the best people you have to pay them
    Set goals but be realistic.

I have been working at Talbots part-time

    Pros

Customer service is important. Depends on store but I have a good store manager, she is accommodating with my class schedule. My store has good hours, it is convenient with school. I work with a good set of people and enjoy that.

    Cons

Culture nonexistant, Talbots is confused on where they stand. No growth within company, no raises despite getting good annual reviews. Talbots is stuck in a rut, and needs to figure out their corporate issues. There is constant changes that do not make sense and are not benefiting the stores. Corporate needs to realize the stores are what makes the money and take them into consideration. There needs to be stricter guidelines for assistant managers, ours does not do anything and gets away with this lazy work attitude.

I have been working at Talbots part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, Not difficult work, Nice loyal customers

    Cons

Management drama, No raises. I know this is retail, but why have stores open on major holidays when your core customer is a retired woman who has already shopped ahead of time for herself so she can focus on her family during these occasions? "Aunt Bea" isn't going to leave her guests to shop anywhere at 6 pm after Thanksgiving dinner or at any other time that evening! She has class and grace and traditional values. This goes for Easter and Christmas Eve as well. If you are unwilling to give your hard working employees any raises, at least give them the dignity of spending well deserved time off with their families, especially since during the aforementioned times, the stores are empty- you don't even offer special door-busters to draw people in so what's the point! Maybe corporate would like to take these shifts!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At store level, communicate more directly and honestly with each other and those under you. At the corporate level, sales strategy needs to be straight forward; no more 4 different percentages off- it confuses the customers no matter how well the signage is and nothing is ever correct at POS. You need to use higher quality raw materials, rely less on opening up credit cards to pad bottom line and focus on a better, more relevant product for profits. Raises would be nice especially if based on sales performance, not on overall store performance. Why should I be punished for the lack of effort from other associates or less than stellar management practices?
