Valued Experience as an Assistant Sales Manager

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Talbots full-time

ProsThe experience garnered from such a position will open other opportunities for the future career-wise, so I'm very happy to have been an Assistant Manager for this company. I felt the role required a certain amount of accountability and independence. For me, I considered it a positive in part, as I enjoy that ability to be flexible within my position. The sales team I worked with was one of the best I've had the pleasure of knowing. Not only that, majority of the customers/clients received most of our staff with the utmost respect and made the experience all the more enjoyable. I don't think the workload is per se all that immense, but I will go into that in the next section. Benefits are immediate upon hire for full-time employees, without any probationary 90 day period that many companies require. The accrual rate for vacation and sick time is quite fair. I found the position to be a decent work/life balance. Oh and I can't forget the rather generous employee discount, which many of our team members took advantage of.

ConsThere aren't many growth or full-time work possibilities with this company. I was one of a few lucky enough to be promoted. I disliked the management structure of the particular store I worked in. Upper management tended to delegate on-the-floor work duties to lower management, while their work left them conveniently in the office hours on end. I've completed many tasks that were the responsibility of our General Manager. General management rarely frequented our store, leaving our staff confused and uncomfortable at times, not to mention an inherent sense of broken and ineffective communication. The pay does not align with the amount of work and service this company expects of its employees. I had some of the most hard-working people on our staff and they all, including myself, deserved a raise, which hasn't occurred for years. While it was wonderful to have medical benefits, the more affordable option being a high deductible PPO plan was actually one of the most expensive health plans I've ever had with a company. I almost missed my old HMO plan.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou've got to get away from the office and come onto the floor. You will achieve a better rapport with your associates if you seem to want to work beside and with them. Not only that, it sets a better example of what ideal leadership should look like. Corporate should ease the expectations they have of sales associates. After all, you are less than eager to pay them more than a couple dollars above minimum wage, offer a commissioned rate in addition to their hourly, and more, if any, incentives/bonuses for stellar performances. Verbal praise just isn't enough and turnover will not decrease.

Overall, the management teams are competent, the environment is upbeat and positive, and the product is highly reputable

I have been working at Talbots part-time for more than a year

ProsPositive atmosphere. Loyal client base. High-quality products. Helpful customer service representatives. Flexible work schedule. Caring coworkers and managers. Low turn-over rate; loyal employees.

ConsFrequent miscommunication on all levels- within management, from higher management, and from management to associates. Very little performance incentive and reward. Very difficult to be promoted within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementTaking suggestions from high-volume store managers and long-time employees would be beneficial. More performance rewards for active employees is a MUST! Better communication between upper management and retail stores.

Assistant Manager

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Talbots

ProsWorkload isn't that bad. Usually have enough hours to schedule a stock person or enough sales people on the floor to process shipment and take care of customers. Manager is salaried but mine has never worked a minute over 40. OT is frowned upon so as an Asst you still have a life outside of work.

ConsYou better negotiate pay before you start because from what I've been told raises haven't been given in years and in a year and a half I haven't received one. And seeing Managers sit in the office while the rest of the staff does all of the work despite the DM being told is not fair.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your sales staff. They know better than anyone what's going on in your store when you aren't there.

I love our store management - they are caring, concerned with our personal lives and help us to achieve our best

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Talbots part-time for more than 5 years

ProsStore management is great. Discounts are exceptional. It's great to sell a quality product. The customer base is loyal and repeating.

ConsNo chance for advancement, they will not let you work more than 25 hours/week, no pay raises in last few years, no opportunity for store input into product mix, no good restocking program to keep needed basic product in stores.

Advice to Senior ManagementRestock the basic items through selling season - we run out of many pant sizes and lose sales. Our store can sell more of the high end items - let us have them even though our size (or whatever) says we don't qualify for certain products. Please reduce the number of sales - our customers get frustrated when they buy something and the next week it is on promotion. I know that you need to do something but not all the time. Get the markdown junk out of the stores faster - at least our store. Our customers want new, full price items - not the same old sale stuff for 3 months.

I have been working at Talbots part-time for more than 3 years

Prosmost general management is very pleasant, approachable, patient and sets a great sales example. the product has a positive reputation and is well known. associates do not work on commission so sales are not pushy. great teamwork in most environments.

Consthe product is constantly changing and is not as reputable as in the past. communication between upper and lower levels of sales teams seems to die out; not all information is shared. it is very difficult to earn a pay raise even after several loyal years with the company.

Advice to Senior Managementcommunication is key in a sales setting and teams benefit from more communication. more employee merit would be very beneficial to keeping quality associates with the company.
